Does touching a dog break my wudu?

No, touching a dog does not break your wudu. Wudu is only broken by things like using the toilet, passing wind or deep sleep. The real question is whether a dog's saliva makes your hand or clothes impure, and the schools differ on that. If a wet dog or its saliva touched you, most scholars say to wash that spot before praying.
Wudu and impurity are two different things
Breaking wudu means you need to make wudu again. Getting impurity (najasa) on you only means you need to wash that spot. Touching a dog, a cat, or anything else is not on the list of things that break wudu in any of the four schools. See What breaks wudu?
What the schools say about dogs
- Shafi'i and Hanbali: a dog is impure, including its saliva and its wet body. If it licks you or your clothes, or you touch it while either of you is wet, wash the spot seven times, one of them with earth or soil. Touching a dry dog with a dry hand leaves nothing behind.
- Hanafi: only the saliva is impure, not the fur or body. Wash what the saliva touched.
- Maliki: every living animal, including dogs, is pure. The washing for a licked bowl is an act of worship, not because of filth.
The washing rule comes from the hadith: "When a dog drinks from the vessel of one of you, let him wash it seven times" (Sahih al-Bukhari 172). In another wording, the first washing is with earth (Sahih Muslim 279).
Dogs aren't evil
Islam doesn't teach hatred of dogs. The Quran even allows eating game caught by trained hunting dogs:
The Prophet ﷺ also told of a man who was forgiven for giving water to a thirsty dog. So be kind, pet a friend's dog if you like, and just be aware of the washing rules. If you have a dog of your own, see Can I keep my dog after becoming Muslim?
Practical steps
- Dry hand on dry fur: nothing to do, in any school.
- Licked hand, or wet contact: wash it before prayer. To follow the stricter view, wash seven times with a little soil or a clay-based soap in one of them.
- Saliva on clothes: wash the spot, or change before praying. See Can I pray with a stain on my clothes?
- Touching a dog never breaks wudu.
- Schools differ on whether dog saliva or a wet dog makes you impure.
- Dry touch leaves nothing to wash.
- Wash saliva or wet contact before praying, seven times in the stricter view.
