Yes. The Prophet ﷺ said every act of goodness is charity, and he specifically mentioned helping someone in need as charity for those who have no money to give. Volunteering your time at a food bank, mosque, school or hospital is sadaqah. But it doesn't replace zakat, which is a fixed duty on wealth.

Every good deed is charity

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "Every act of goodness is sadaqa" (Sahih Muslim 1005). In Islam, charity is a broad idea: anything you do to benefit others for Allah's sake is rewarded as sadaqah. The Quran also tells believers to "cooperate in righteousness and piety" (Quran 5:2), and volunteering is exactly that.

Helping the needy

When the Prophet ﷺ said every Muslim should give charity, people asked about someone with nothing to give. He listed alternatives, including that "He should help the needy who appeal for help," and finally, to do good and keep away from evil, which "will be regarded as charitable deeds" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1445). Your time and skills are a real gift, sometimes worth more than money.

Ideas for volunteering

  • Food banks and soup kitchens: sorting, cooking, serving.
  • Your mosque: cleaning, setting up iftars, teaching kids, welcoming visitors.
  • Convert support: mentoring new Muslims, teaching prayer.
  • Hospitals and care homes: visiting the sick and lonely.
  • Professional skills: legal, medical, IT or design help for charities.
  • Environment: tree planting, litter picks.

Volunteering alongside people of other faiths is fine and builds goodwill. See Can I still donate to non-Muslim charities as a Muslim?

Not instead of zakat

If you have savings above the nisab, zakat is still due in money. Volunteering can't replace it, just as donating money can't replace prayer. Think of volunteering as extra sadaqah on top of your obligations. See What is the difference between zakat and sadaqah? and Is a smile really charity in Islam?
