How can I prepare for death as a Muslim?

Prepare by repenting sincerely, settling debts and wrongs, writing a will, keeping up your worship and living with the end in mind. None of this means expecting to die soon. The Prophet ﷺ taught us to be ready, so that when death comes, we leave with a clear heart and hope in Allah's mercy.

Repent and renew

Tawbah (repentance) means stopping a sin, regretting it and resolving not to return. Do it often, not only when you feel close to the end:

Turn to Allah in sincere repentance, so your Lord may absolve you of your sins and admit you into Gardens, under which rivers flow" Quran 66:8

Settle debts and put wrongs right

The Prophet ﷺ said that a believer's soul is held back by his debt until it is paid (Jami at-Tirmidhi 1078). So:

  • Pay off what you can and keep a written list of what you owe.
  • Return anything you borrowed, and tell your family about loans you have given.
  • Ask forgiveness from anyone you wronged, and forgive those who wronged you.

Write a will

The Prophet ﷺ said it is not right for a Muslim who has something to leave to let two nights pass without his will written and kept ready (Sahih al-Bukhari 2738). Islamic inheritance shares are fixed, and scholars limit gifts to non-heirs to one third of the estate. In the UK or the USA, make a legally valid will that follows these principles as far as local law allows. A solicitor and a trusted imam can help. Keep up worship and good deeds

Pray on time, keep the Quran in your life and give regularly, even small amounts. The Prophet ﷺ said that when a person dies his deeds end except three: ongoing charity, knowledge that benefits others, and a righteous child who prays for him (Sahih Muslim 1631). Planting a tree, funding a well or teaching someone something useful can all count.

Live with the end in mind

The Prophet ﷺ told Ibn Umar to be in this world as if he were a stranger or a traveller (Sahih al-Bukhari 6416). That does not mean giving up on life. It means holding it lightly, working, enjoying halal pleasures and caring for family while staying ready to return to Allah.

If thinking about death makes you anxious, you are not alone. See How do I deal with fear of death as a Muslim?
