How do I ask my child's school to recognize Eid?

Write a short, friendly email to your child's teacher or head teacher early in the year, giving the expected Eid dates and asking for an authorized absence, plus one simple way the class could mark the day. Most schools in the UK, Europe and the USA are happy to help when parents ask politely and in good time.

Know what you're asking for

"Recognize Eid" can mean different things, so be clear about what matters most to you:

  • Time off: an excused or authorized absence for Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
  • No big clashes: tests, trips or sports days not placed on Eid if it can be avoided.
  • Inclusion: Eid on the school calendar, a mention in assembly, or a short class activity.

In England, head teachers can authorize absence for a "day set apart for religious observance" by your faith. Many US school districts list Eid as an excused religious holiday, and some now close for it. See Can I miss school for Eid?

A simple email you can adapt

Keep it short and positive. For example: "Dear Ms Smith, our family is Muslim and we celebrate Eid al-Fitr, expected around [date]. The exact day depends on the moon, so we will confirm the evening before. We'd be grateful if [child] could have the day as an authorized religious absence. If it would help, I'm happy to share a short story or some sweets with the class so they can learn about Eid. Thank you!"

Mention that the date can shift by a day. Teachers appreciate knowing why you can't confirm it weeks ahead. See How do I know which day Eid is?

Offer to help, don't just ask

Schools respond best when you make it easy. You could offer a picture book about Eid, a short talk, a craft such as moon and star cards, or a box of dates and sweets. Teaching others about your faith with kindness is part of good character. Eid is a day Allah gave us to celebrate His blessings:

وَلِتُكْمِلُوا۟ ٱلْعِدَّةَ وَلِتُكَبِّرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ مَا هَدَىٰكُمْ وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ "And [He wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful." Quran 2:185

The Prophet ﷺ himself said, "Every people has its Eid, and this is our Eid" (Sahih al-Bukhari 952). It's fair to ask that your child's Eid is respected the way other holidays are.

If the school says no

Stay calm and ask what the policy is. You can talk to the head teacher, the school governors or district, or a local Muslim parents' group. Many schools changed their calendars because parents asked year after year. Older students can also ask about exams. See Can I ask for exam dates to be moved for Eid?

Key points
  • Ask early, in writing, and give the expected Eid dates.
  • Explain that the exact day depends on the moon sighting.
  • Request an authorized religious absence and avoidance of big clashes.
  • Offer a book, talk or sweets so the class can learn about Eid.
Tip: Put both Eid dates in your phone calendar with a reminder six weeks before. That's the perfect moment to send your email, before the school plans trips and tests.
