Write a polite request to the school's catering manager or head teacher, explain what halal means, and suggest simple options they can actually offer. Many schools in the UK, Europe and the USA already serve halal meals or a reliable vegetarian choice, so you are rarely asking for something new.

Why halal food matters

Muslims are asked to eat food that is both lawful and wholesome:

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ كُلُوا۟ مِمَّا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ حَلَـٰلًا طَيِّبًا "O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth [that is] lawful and good..." Quran 2:168

The Prophet ﷺ also taught that Allah is good and accepts only what is good (Sahih Muslim 1015). For a pupil, this mostly means avoiding pork, alcohol in cooking, and meat that wasn't slaughtered the Islamic way. Scholars differ on meat from Christians and Jews: some accept it, many prefer certified halal. See Can Muslims eat kosher food?

Who to ask

  • School pupils: a parent or guardian usually writes to the head teacher or the catering manager. If your parents aren't Muslim, you can ask a teacher you trust to help you raise it.
  • College and university students: contact the catering or hospitality team directly, or go through the students' union.
  • Group requests: if other Muslim families or students want the same thing, write together. Numbers help schools plan.

What to suggest

Make it easy for them to say yes. Useful options include:

  • Halal-certified chicken or meat from an approved supplier on some or all days.
  • A clearly labelled vegetarian or fish option every day as a fallback.
  • Labels that show pork, gelatine and alcohol in dishes and desserts.
  • Separate utensils for halal and non-halal meat where possible.

Explain that you aren't asking the whole menu to change, just for a reliable choice. It's worth mentioning that halal meals often suit other pupils too.

If the answer is no

Don't be discouraged. You can bring a packed lunch, choose vegetarian or seafood dishes, and check ingredients when you're unsure. Most Muslims live this way at work and school every day. See Can I eat at the university cafeteria as a Muslim? Not all chicken is halal by default, so asking where it comes from is fair. See Is all chicken halal?

Key points
  • Write politely to the catering manager or head teacher.
  • Explain halal briefly: no pork, no alcohol, properly slaughtered meat.
  • Suggest practical options, like a daily vegetarian dish and clear labels.
  • A packed lunch is always a halal backup.
Tip: Offer the school the name of a local halal-certified supplier. Doing a little of the research for them often turns a "maybe" into a "yes".
