How do I celebrate Eid if I'm sick?

You celebrate Eid when you're sick by doing what you can and letting go of the rest. Illness excuses you from going to the Eid prayer, and you still get the reward of the good deeds you normally do. Say the takbir, make dua, wear something nice if you can, and connect with loved ones from home.
You're excused, and still rewarded
Scholars differ on how important the Eid prayer is: the Hanafis call it wajib, many Hanbalis a communal duty, and the Malikis and Shafi'is a stressed sunnah. But all agree that sickness is a valid excuse. Allah never asks more than you can carry.
Even better, the Prophet ﷺ said that when a person falls ill or travels, they are rewarded for the deeds they used to do when healthy and at home (Sahih al-Bukhari 2996). If you normally go to the Eid prayer, your intention still counts.
Small ways to mark the day
- Say the takbir. "Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illallah..." can be said lying in bed. See What is the Eid takbir and when do I say it?
- Freshen up. A wash and clean or new clothes can lift your mood, if your body allows it.
- Pray at home. If you feel able, you can pray two rak'ahs of Eid at home. See What if I miss the Eid prayer?
- Video call. Join your family's breakfast or Eid lunch on screen.
- Let people come to you. Visiting the sick is a sunnah, so friends earn reward by dropping by with food.
Look after your health first
Follow your doctor's advice on medicine, food and rest. If you have something contagious, it's considerate to skip crowded gatherings and hugs, and to keep visits short. Don't feel guilty about it; protecting others is part of good character. Zakat al-fitr for Eid al-Fitr is still due if you can afford it, and you can pay it online.
Use the time for dua
Illness can feel lonely on a festive day, but it also wipes away sins and brings you closer to Allah. Make dua for your recovery and for the people you love. See What dua can I say when I'm sick?
