How do I clean baby urine for prayer?

Wash the wet spot with water until the urine is gone; for a baby boy who only drinks milk, many scholars say sprinkling water over it is enough. You don't need to change your whole outfit or wash everything, only the place that actually got wet.
Baby boys and baby girls
Umm Qays bint Mihsan brought her baby son, who hadn't started eating food yet, to the Prophet ﷺ. The baby urinated on his clothes, so he asked for water and sprinkled it over the spot without washing it (Sahih al-Bukhari 223). Other reports say that a baby girl's urine is washed, while a baby boy's is sprinkled. The schools take this in two ways:
- Shafi'i and Hanbali: for a boy who only has milk, sprinkling water so it covers the spot is enough. A girl's urine, or a boy's once he eats food, is washed.
- Hanafi and Maliki: both are washed, though a light wash is enough.
Either way, all babies' urine counts as impure. The difference is only in how you clean it.
Step by step
- Find the wet area. Only that spot needs cleaning, not the whole garment.
- Wash or sprinkle. Pour water over it until the urine's colour and smell are gone, or sprinkle it if your school allows that for a baby boy.
- Squeeze it out if the fabric is thick, then let it dry or pray in it damp.
- Wash your hands if they touched the urine. Your wudu isn't broken by touching urine.
Nappies, carpets and car seats
A baby in a clean, sealed nappy isn't a problem at all. You can carry them and even hold them while praying. See Can I hold my baby while praying? For carpets and sofas, blot the urine, pour some clean water over it and blot again. A normal washing machine cycle cleans clothes and bedding. If you're not sure whether the urine touched your clothes, assume they're clean. See Can I pray with a stain on my clothes?
Don't let it overwhelm you
Life with a baby is messy, and Islam knows that. Allah describes the religion like this:
Do a reasonable check, clean what you know is wet, and pray. Rewashing again and again, or doubting every patch, can turn into waswas. See What is waswas and how do I deal with it?
- Only clean the spot that got wet, not your whole outfit.
- Baby boy on milk only: sprinkling is enough for many scholars (Sahih al-Bukhari 223).
- Baby girl, or any child eating food: wash the spot.
- If you're not sure urine touched you, you're clean.
