You cope with racism from other Muslims by remembering that Islam itself rejects racism, protecting your own wellbeing, and finding people who treat you as an equal. Prejudice from fellow Muslims hurts deeply, especially for converts, but it reflects people's culture or ego, not the religion. You're allowed to speak up, set boundaries and step away.

Islam is clear: no one is better by race

The Quran says human diversity is meant for knowing one another, and that honor comes only from piety:

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَـٰكُم مِّن ذَكَرٍ وَأُنثَىٰ وَجَعَلْنَـٰكُمْ شُعُوبًا وَقَبَآئِلَ لِتَعَارَفُوٓا۟ ۚ إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ أَتْقَىٰكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرٌ "O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted." Quran 49:13

The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah does not look at your appearance or wealth, but at your hearts and deeds (Sahih Muslim 2564). When the Companion Abu Dharr insulted a man by mentioning his mother's background, the Prophet ﷺ told him, "You are a man who still has some ignorance (jahiliyyah) in you" (Sahih al-Bukhari 30). Bilal, a formerly enslaved Black man, was chosen to call the first adhan. See Is Islam only for Arabs?

What it can look like

  • Being ignored, stared at or treated as a curiosity at the mosque.
  • Comments that you'll "never really be Muslim" because of your race or background.
  • Families refusing a marriage purely because of ethnicity. See Can I marry someone from a different race or culture as a Muslim?
  • Black, white, Latino or Asian converts being boxed into stereotypes.

Looking after yourself

  • Separate the people from the faith. Your relationship is with Allah, not with any one community.
  • Name your feelings. Anger, sadness and exhaustion are normal reactions to injustice. Talk them through with a friend or counselor.
  • Find your people. Look for diverse mosques, convert circles, campus societies or online groups where you feel welcome. See How do I find a convert-friendly mosque?
  • Limit time with repeat offenders. You don't owe anyone your presence if they keep demeaning you.

Speaking up

When you feel safe, a calm reply can help: "Islam teaches that no race is better than another." You can also raise serious or repeated behavior with mosque leadership; many communities are working on this and need to hear about it. Standing against injustice is part of Islam, but you don't have to fight every battle. Choosing peace for your own heart is valid too.

Key points
  • Racism contradicts the Quran and the Sunnah.
  • Prejudice from Muslims reflects culture or ego, not Islam.
  • Protect your mental health and find welcoming communities.
  • Speak up when it's safe, and set boundaries when it isn't.
Tip: Keep Quran 49:13 saved on your phone. When someone makes you feel less than them, reading Allah's own words can steady you faster than any argument.
