Keep your expectations realistic, plan meals and rest ahead, and count caring for your children as part of your worship. Parents of toddlers rarely get quiet nights of prayer, and that's okay. Allah asks you for what you can do, and looking after your family with patience is itself rewarded.

Lower the bar, keep the heart

Ramadan with small children looks different from the Ramadan you see online. You may pray taraweeh in short bursts, read the Quran in five-minute pieces, and spend iftar cutting food into tiny pieces. That is still a real Ramadan. Allah says:

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا ٱسْتَطَعْتُمْ "So fear Allah as much as you are able." Quran 64:16

Even the Prophet ﷺ adjusted worship for little ones. He said he would start a prayer intending to make it long, then shorten it when he heard a child crying, so as not to trouble the mother (Sahih al-Bukhari 707). You can pray with a child nearby too. See Can I hold my baby while praying?

Plan food and sleep

  • Batch cook on weekends and freeze soups and stews so iftar takes minutes.
  • Feed the children first during the day without feeling guilty about smelling food; it doesn't affect your fast.
  • Nap when they nap, even for 20 minutes. Tiredness, not hunger, is usually the hardest part.
  • Split the night with your spouse: one prays while the other settles the kids, then swap.

If you're pregnant or breastfeeding

Many mothers of small children are also pregnant or nursing. Islam allows you to skip fasting if you fear for yourself or your baby, and make the days up later; schools differ on whether feeding a poor person (fidyah) is also needed. Follow your doctor's advice. See Do I have to fast while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Bring the children into Ramadan

Small children don't fast, but they love being included. When the Companions had their children practice a voluntary fast, their mothers gave them toys made of wool to distract them until iftar (Sahih al-Bukhari 1960). For little ones today:

  • Let them hand out dates at iftar.
  • Make a Ramadan calendar with one good deed a day.
  • Read a short story about the Prophets before bed.
