How do I find peace of mind in Islam?

Islam teaches that peace of mind comes from remembering Allah, trusting His plan, and being content with what you have. It doesn't promise a life without problems. It offers an inner calm that can hold steady while life changes around you.

Remembrance of Allah

The Quran names the source of calm directly:

ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَطْمَئِنُّ قُلُوبُهُم بِذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ ۗ أَلَا بِذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ ٱلْقُلُوبُ "Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured." Quran 13:28

Remembrance (dhikr) includes the five daily prayers, reading the Quran, short phrases like "SubhanAllah" and "Alhamdulillah," and talking to Allah in your own words. Even a few minutes a day, done regularly, changes the tone of your mind. See What is dhikr and how do I start?

Trust instead of control

A lot of mental unrest comes from trying to control things we can't. Tawakkul means doing your best and then leaving the result to Allah. It doesn't mean you'll never worry, but it gives the worry somewhere to go. See Does tawakkul mean I shouldn't worry?

Contentment and gratitude

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Richness is not having many possessions; real richness is richness of the soul" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6446). He also taught: "Look at those below you and not at those above you, so you don't belittle Allah's blessings on you" (Sahih Muslim 2963). Constant comparison, especially on social media, quietly eats away at peace. See How do I deal with social media addiction as a Muslim?

Daily habits that protect your peace

  • Anchor your day in prayer. Five short pauses break the rush and reset your focus.
  • Morning and evening adhkar. Five to ten minutes of remembrance at the start and end of the day.
  • Keep a clear conscience. Sins and unresolved wrongs weigh on the heart; repentance and fixing what you can bring relief.
  • Guard your sleep and body. The Prophet ﷺ slept early after Isha and took care of his health.
  • Good company. Spend time with people who make you calmer and closer to Allah.

When peace feels out of reach

Sometimes a lack of peace is more than a spiritual issue. Ongoing anxiety, panic or low mood can be a health condition, and treating it is encouraged in Islam. Dhikr and therapy work well together; you don't have to choose one.

Key points
  • Hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah.
  • Tawakkul gives your worries a place to go.
  • Real richness is contentment of the soul.
  • Ongoing anxiety may need medical help too.
Tip: After each prayer, sit for one extra minute. Say "SubhanAllah," "Alhamdulillah" and "Allahu Akbar" 33 times each, slowly, with your phone out of reach. It is a small daily reset many Muslims swear by.
