How do I make dua step by step?

To make dua, praise Allah, send blessings on the Prophet ﷺ, ask for what you need with a sincere heart, and end with blessings and "Ameen". That's the core. Raising your hands, facing the qibla and being in wudu are recommended extras, and you can use any language.
Why this order?
The Prophet ﷺ once heard a man make dua without praising Allah or sending blessings on him, and said the man had rushed. Then he taught that when one of you makes dua, he should begin by praising and glorifying his Lord, then send blessings on the Prophet, and then ask for whatever he wishes (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3477). Allah is close and ready to answer:
Step by step
- 1. Get ready (optional but good). Make wudu if you can, face the qibla, and raise your hands with palms up. See Do I have to raise my hands when making dua?
- 2. Praise Allah. For example "Alhamdulillahi rabbil-'alamin" (All praise is for Allah, Lord of the worlds), or call on Him by His names: Ya Rahman, Ya Rahim.
- 3. Send blessings on the Prophet ﷺ. "Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad" is enough.
- 4. Admit your need and your mistakes. Say "Astaghfirullah", and be honest about where you are.
- 5. Ask. Ask clearly for what you want, for this life and the next, in Arabic or in your own language. See Can I make dua in English?
- 6. Include others. Pray for your parents, family, friends and the whole ummah.
- 7. Close. Send blessings on the Prophet ﷺ again and say "Ameen". See Do I have to say "Ameen" after every dua?
The attitude that matters most
The steps are a frame. What fills it is your heart. Ask with hope and certainty, not "I'll try, just in case". Be humble and persistent. The Prophet ﷺ said your dua is answered as long as you don't become impatient and say, "I prayed but I wasn't answered" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6340). An answer can come as what you asked for, something better, or protection from a harm you never saw.
Also keep your income and food halal as best you can, since that supports your dua.
Short on time?
You don't need all seven steps every time. A quick "Ya Allah, help me" on a hard day is a real dua. Save the full version for quiet moments, like after prayer, in sujood, or in the last third of the night.
- Praise Allah, send blessings on the Prophet ﷺ, then ask (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3477).
- Wudu, qibla and raised hands are recommended, not required.
- Ask with certainty and don't give up when the answer takes time.
- Short, spontaneous duas are valid too.
