You don't need a new kitchen: remove the haram food, wash your pots, pans and utensils well, and start buying halal ingredients. Washing is enough to clean cookware that touched pork or alcohol. There is no special ritual or blessing needed for a halal kitchen.

Step 1: Clear out the haram items

Go through your fridge and cupboards and set aside pork products (bacon, ham, sausages, lard, pepperoni), alcohol, and meat that wasn't slaughtered in a way you accept. Check labels on items like gummy sweets, stock cubes and desserts for gelatin or wine. Many converts give these to non-Muslim family members or friends rather than throwing them away. See Can I cook with wine as a Muslim if the alcohol burns off?

Step 2: Wash, don't throw away

Your pots, pans, plates and cutlery can stay. When the Prophet ﷺ was asked about eating from the dishes of the People of the Book, he said to use other dishes if available, otherwise wash them and eat from them (Sahih al-Bukhari 5478). Scholars explain that washing removes any impurity.

  • Wash with hot water and washing-up liquid until no grease, taste or smell remains.
  • A dishwasher cycle counts as washing.
  • Many scholars recommend scrubbing scratched non-stick pans and wooden boards well. Replace them only if they still smell of pork fat.
  • Clean the oven, grill and microwave once.

Scholars differ on how many times pork impurity must be washed: some schools say once until it's gone, others (mainly Shafi'i) say seven times with one wash using soil or a cleaning agent. Choose one approach and don't overthink it. See Is it haram to eat food that touched pork?

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ كُلُوا۟ مِن طَيِّبَـٰتِ مَا رَزَقْنَـٰكُمْ وَٱشْكُرُوا۟ لِلَّهِ إِن كُنتُمْ إِيَّاهُ تَعْبُدُونَ "O you who have believed, eat from the good things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is [indeed] Him that you worship." Quran 2:172

Step 3: Shop halal from now on

Most food is halal by default: vegetables, fruit, grains, eggs, dairy, fish and pulses. The main things to watch are meat, gelatin, alcohol-based ingredients and some additives. A few staple swaps (halal stock cubes, beef or turkey bacon, agar instead of gelatin) cover most recipes.

If you share the kitchen

Living with non-Muslim family or flatmates is common. You can keep a shelf, a pan and a chopping board just for you, wash shared items before use, and politely ask that pork isn't fried in your pan. See Can I eat food my non-Muslim mom cooked?

Key points
  • Remove pork, alcohol and doubtful meat from your kitchen.
  • Wash pots and utensils well; you don't need to replace them.
  • Most everyday food is already halal.
  • In shared kitchens, keep a few items just for yourself.
Tip: Do one "halal reset" weekend: clear the cupboards, run everything through the dishwasher, and stock up on a few halal staples. After that, it's just normal shopping.
