How do I make wudu on an airplane?

Yes, you can make wudu on a plane. Use the sink in the lavatory and keep it quick and tidy. If you truly can't get to water, for example because of turbulence or crew instructions, Islam allows tayammum (dry purification) instead.
Wudu in the lavatory
A plane bathroom is small, but wudu doesn't need much space or much water. A simple routine:
- Wait for the seat belt sign to be off and choose a quiet moment, not when a queue is forming.
- Wash your hands, rinse your mouth and nose, wash your face and arms, wipe your head and ears, then wash your feet.
- For the feet, lift one foot at a time to the sink edge or pour water over it from a cup. Balance carefully.
- Dry the floor and sink with paper towels so the next passenger isn't left with a puddle.
If you put your socks on after a full wudu, you may wipe over them instead of washing the feet, as long as you meet the usual conditions.
Make wudu before you board
The easiest option is to make wudu at the airport. It stays valid until something breaks it, so on a short flight you may need no wudu on board at all. If it does break, you can renew it in the lavatory. See What breaks wudu?
When water isn't possible: tayammum
The Quran gives travelers a concession when water can't be found or used:
The Prophet ﷺ also said that the earth has been made a place of prayer and a means of tayammum for his community (Sahih al-Bukhari 335).
On a plane there is no soil, so scholars discuss what to use. The Hanafi school accepts anything of the earth's nature, while the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools want actual dust, so many people strike a clean, dusty surface such as a bag or window ledge. Because the details vary, ask your imam before a long trip. See How do I do tayammum? and What can I use for tayammum?
Praying on board
Once you have wudu, you can pray in your seat if there is no room to stand. For the prayer itself, see Can I pray on a plane?
- Wudu in the lavatory is allowed; use a little water and leave the area dry.
- Making wudu at the airport often saves you doing it on board.
- If you really can't reach water, tayammum is a valid substitute for travelers.
- Schools differ on what surface to use for tayammum on a plane.
