How do I make wudu with a beard?

To make wudu with a beard, wash your face as normal, let water flow over the beard, and run your wet fingers through it from underneath. If your beard is thin and the skin shows through, water must reach the skin. If it's thick, washing the outer surface is enough, and combing it with wet fingers is the sunnah.
Thin beard vs thick beard
The Quran commands washing the face in wudu:
Scholars of the four schools explain what "face" means when hair grows on it:
- Thin or patchy beard (skin visible): water must reach the skin underneath, because the skin is still part of the visible face.
- Thick beard (skin hidden): washing the outer surface is enough. You don't need to force water to every root.
Stubble and short beards are treated like the thin category, so a normal face wash covers them.
Running your fingers through it (takhlil)
Anas ibn Malik reported that when the Prophet ﷺ made wudu, he took a handful of water, put it under his chin and ran it through his beard, saying that this is what his Lord commanded him (Sunan Abi Dawud 145). The majority of scholars consider this sunnah for a thick beard, not obligatory.
How to do it: after washing your face three times, scoop a little water, bring it up under your chin, and comb through the beard with your fingers from below, palms facing your neck.
The part below the chin
Scholars differ about the beard hair that hangs below the jawline. The Shafi'i and Hanbali schools say its outer surface should be washed too, as it follows the face. Many Hanafi scholars say washing it is recommended rather than required. A simple approach that satisfies all views: let water run down the full length of your beard when you wash your face.
Common questions
- Beard oil or balm? A light oil doesn't block wudu. Thick wax that stops water reaching the hair should be rinsed off first.
- Moustache: treated the same way. If thick, wash the outer surface; if thin, let water reach the lip skin.
- Just starting to grow one? No pressure, take it at your own pace. See Do I have to grow a beard right away?
- Does touching or trimming my beard break wudu? No. See What breaks wudu?
- Thin beard: water must reach the skin.
- Thick beard: washing the outer surface is enough.
- Running wet fingers through the beard is sunnah (Sunan Abi Dawud 145).
- Let water run down the whole beard to cover all views.
