Usually a short, warm message is enough. Thank the person, say you can't come, and suggest another way to spend time together. You don't owe anyone a long religious explanation, and you can stay completely truthful without making up an excuse.

Is it okay to say no?

The Prophet ﷺ said, "If any one of you is invited, he should accept the invitation" (Sahih Muslim 1431). Scholars treat this most strongly for wedding feasts. Many see accepting other invitations as encouraged rather than required, and they agree that something forbidden at the event, such as heavy drinking, is a valid reason to decline. You are not being rude by saying no, as long as you are kind about it.

Words that work

  • "Thank you so much for inviting me. I can't make it, but I hope you have a lovely evening."
  • "I don't celebrate the holiday, but I really appreciate being included."
  • "Parties aren't really my thing, but I'd love to see you. Could we get coffee next week?"

Be honest, but you can be brief. "I can't make it" is true and needs no more. The Quran guides the way we speak:

وَقُل لِّعِبَادِى يَقُولُوا۟ ٱلَّتِى هِىَ أَحْسَنُ "Tell My servants to say only what is best." Quran 17:53

Friends, neighbours and bosses

  • A friend: reply personally, not with a group message, and name what you enjoy about them.
  • A neighbour: the Prophet ﷺ said Gabriel kept urging him to treat neighbours kindly until he thought they might be made heirs (Sahih al-Bukhari 6014). Thank them at the door, drop off something small, or say hello earlier in the day.
  • A boss or team lead: answer early and privately. Mention that you'd like to join a lunch or another team event instead.
  • Family: that is a bigger conversation. See How do I tell my family I won't celebrate Christmas anymore?

Offer something else

A no feels softer when it comes with a yes. Suggest breakfast, a walk, or a dessert at your place. You can also invite people to your own celebrations. See Can I invite my coworkers to an Eid celebration?

Key points
  • Islam encourages accepting invitations, but a valid reason allows you to decline.
  • Thank them, say you can't come and keep it short and true.
  • Reply to neighbours and bosses with extra care.
  • Offer another way to meet so the friendship stays warm.
Tip: Reply quickly. A fast, friendly no is kinder than leaving a host waiting, and it gives them time to plan.
