How do I pray at the airport?

Look for the airport's prayer room or multi-faith room first; if there isn't one, any clean, quiet corner works. Make wudu in the restroom, find the qibla with an app, and pray. As a traveler you can usually shorten and combine prayers, which makes airport prayer much easier.

Find a prayer room

Most large airports in Europe and the USA have a multi-faith room, chapel or "quiet room", usually airside after security. Search the airport's website or map for "prayer room", "multi-faith" or "meditation room", or ask at the information desk. Many have a qibla sign, prayer mats and a washing area.

If there is no room, don't worry. The Prophet ﷺ said the whole earth has been made a place of prayer for his community, so wherever prayer time finds you, you can pray (Sahih al-Bukhari 335). A quiet gate area, an empty corner, or a spot near the windows is fine, as long as it's clean and you're not blocking people.

Wudu in an airport restroom

  • Choose a quieter restroom, often near the far gates.
  • Wash your face and arms at the sink, and wipe a wet paper towel over clean socks if you put them on with wudu instead of washing your feet.
  • Wipe the sink and floor dry afterwards. It's good manners and good for how people see Muslims.

If you wear hijab, plan the security check calmly too. See Do I have to remove my hijab at airport security?

Find the qibla

Use a phone compass app, or ask staff which direction is south-east (from much of Western Europe) or north-east (from most of the USA). An honest best guess is enough. See Can I use a qibla app to find the prayer direction?

Use the travel concessions

Prayer has fixed times, and Allah reminds us of that:

إِنَّ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَـٰبًا مَّوْقُوتًا "Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times." Quran 4:103

But travel gives you room inside those times. Once you've left your town, you can shorten Dhuhr, Asr and Isha to two rak'at and combine Dhuhr with Asr, or Maghrib with Isha, at the time of either one. Often that means praying two prayers at the airport before boarding and nothing on the plane. If a prayer time falls during the flight, see Can I pray on a plane?

Key points
  • Check the airport map for a prayer or multi-faith room.
  • Any clean, quiet spot is valid if there is no room.
  • Make wudu discreetly and leave the sink dry.
  • Shorten and combine to fit your flight times.
Tip: Before you fly, check the prayer times at both airports and your flight times side by side. Five minutes of planning tells you exactly which prayers to combine before boarding.
