How do I pray Fajr on an early flight?

Pray Fajr at the airport if its time has started before you board; otherwise pray it on the plane, in your seat if needed, before sunrise where you are. Fajr runs from true dawn until sunrise, so check the time window for your location and plan around it.
Step 1: Check the Fajr window
Fajr starts at true dawn and ends at sunrise. On an early morning flight, this window often overlaps with check-in, boarding or take-off. Look up the Fajr and sunrise times for your departure airport the night before. If you're flying east, sunrise may come sooner than you expect, so check the times along your route too.
Step 2: Pray before boarding if you can
If dawn has already come while you're at the airport, pray there. This is the easiest option because you can stand, bow and prostrate normally.
- Make wudu at home or in the airport restroom.
- Find the prayer room or a quiet corner near your gate.
- Pray the two rak'ahs of Fajr. Fajr is never shortened, even when traveling.
Step 3: If Fajr starts after take-off
Don't wait until you land if sunrise will come before then. Pray on the plane:
- Make wudu before boarding and try to keep it. If you lose it, use the plane's restroom or, if water truly can't be used, tayammum. See How do I do tayammum?
- Face the qibla at the start if you can, using a qibla app with the flight map.
- Stand if there's space, for example near the galley, and ask the crew politely. If not, pray seated and lean forward a little for ruku' and a little more for sujud.
Most scholars accept this prayer as valid. Some, especially in the Hanafi and Maliki schools, prefer that you repeat it after landing if you couldn't stand or face the qibla, so doing that is a cautious option. See Can I pray on a plane?
What if you miss it?
If you slept through it or couldn't pray at all, make it up as soon as you can. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever forgets a prayer or sleeps through it should pray it when he remembers it (Sahih Muslim 684). For longer journeys, see How do I pray on a long-haul flight across time zones?
