Yes, you can pray in a hotel room, and it's simpler than it sounds. Find the qibla with an app, pick a clean patch of floor, lay down a prayer mat or a clean towel, and pray. Hotel carpets are presumed clean, pictures on the wall don't cancel your prayer, and a shared room only needs a little planning.

Finding the qibla

Some hotels in the Middle East, Turkey and Malaysia put a small qibla sticker in a drawer or on the ceiling, but in Europe and the USA you'll usually work it out yourself. A qibla compass app is the easiest way. Calibrate it away from the TV, minibar and metal furniture, which can throw off the reading. You only need to face the general direction. See Can I use a qibla app to find the prayer direction?

وَحَيْثُ مَا كُنتُمْ فَوَلُّوا۟ وُجُوهَكُمْ شَطْرَهُۥ "And wherever you [believers] are, turn your faces [i.e., yourselves] toward it [in prayer]." Quran 2:144

A clean place to pray

The rule in Islam is that things are pure unless you know otherwise, so you don't need to worry about who stood on the carpet before you. A travel prayer mat is handy, but a clean bath towel works just as well. Lay it in the space between the bed and the wall, or by the window. The Prophet ﷺ said the earth has been made a place of prayer for his followers (Sahih al-Bukhari 335), and a hotel floor is no exception.

Pictures and TVs in the room

Hotel art often shows people or animals. Your prayer is still valid, but it's better not to have a picture right in front of you. The Prophet ﷺ asked Aisha to remove a curtain with pictures because they distracted him in his prayer (Sahih al-Bukhari 374). So turn slightly so the picture isn't in your line of sight, drape a towel over it, or switch off the TV. If none of that works, just pray; it's a matter of focus, not validity.

Sharing a room

If you're sharing with a colleague, a friend or family who aren't Muslim, a quick heads-up helps: "I'm going to pray for five minutes, I'll be on the floor by the window." Most people are respectful and curious. You can pray while they're in the room; they just shouldn't walk right in front of you. If you'd rather have privacy, pray while they're in the shower, at breakfast, or ask the front desk if there's a quiet room. Many airports and some hotels in big cities have a multi-faith room.

Key points
  • Use a qibla app and face the general direction.
  • Hotel floors are presumed clean; a towel can be your mat.
  • Pictures in the room don't break your prayer, but avoid facing them.
  • A short, friendly explanation is enough for a roommate.
Tip: When you check in, work out the qibla once and set a small object, like a shoe or a pen, pointing that way. You won't have to open the app for every prayer.
