How do I pray on a long-haul flight across time zones?

Yes, you still pray, by the sky outside the plane, not by the clock at home. Prayer times follow the sun where you actually are, so they shift as you fly. Use a flight-aware prayer app or the in-flight map, combine prayers where your school allows it, and when you can't be sure, make a sensible estimate.

Follow the sun where you are

Each prayer is tied to the sun: Fajr at dawn, Dhuhr after midday, Asr in the afternoon, Maghrib at sunset and Isha after dark. On a plane, that means the sun at the plane's position, not at your departure city or your destination. Your watch and your phone's home time zone are no help here. What counts is what's happening outside the window.

  • Flight prayer apps: some apps let you enter your flight and calculate prayer times along the route.
  • The in-flight map: it often shows local time, sunrise and sunset, and the day-night line.
  • The window: sunrise and sunset are easy to see from 35,000 feet.
  • Ask the crew: they can tell you local time and where you are.

Regular prayer apps can be thrown off without a live location. See Can I trust prayer time apps?

Use the traveler's concessions

A long-haul flight is travel by any measure, so you can shorten the four-unit prayers to two. The Prophet ﷺ combined Dhuhr with Asr and Maghrib with Isha on journeys (Sahih al-Bukhari 1107), which the Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools allow; the Hanafi school doesn't combine outside Hajj. Combining is a big help in the air: pray Dhuhr and Asr together during the window of either one, or pray before boarding and after landing. Fajr can't be combined with anything. How to actually pray in your seat or in the galley is covered in Can I pray on a plane?

Very long or very short days

Flying west, you can chase the sun and get a "day" of 16 hours or more. Flying east, night may last only a few hours, with Maghrib, Isha and Fajr crowded together. Either way, keep following the sun you see: wait for sunset to pray Maghrib, even if it feels late, and pray each prayer when its time arrives, even if they come quickly.

When you genuinely can't tell the times, estimate. The Prophet ﷺ described a future day that would last like a year, and when the Companions asked if one day's prayers would be enough, he said no, they should estimate the times (Sahih Muslim 2937). Scholars use this to say that a careful estimate is acceptable whenever normal signs aren't available.

لَا يُكَلِّفُ ٱللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا "Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity." Quran 2:286

Plan it before you fly

  1. Check which prayers fall during the flight and which you can pray at the airport.
  2. Make wudu before boarding and try to keep it; plane bathrooms work if you need to renew it.
  3. Decide which prayers you'll combine.
  4. After landing, switch to local times right away.

Don't stress about getting every minute exact. A sincere effort counts. For the direction, see Can I use a qibla app to find the prayer direction?

Key points
  • Prayer times follow the sun at the plane's position.
  • Use a flight prayer app, the in-flight map or the window.
  • Shorten, and (except Hanafis) combine to make it easier.
  • When the times are unclear, a careful estimate is enough.
Tip: Before a long flight, write the expected prayer times along your route on your phone's notes. Mid-flight, when you're tired and jet-lagged, you'll just check the list.
