It depends on the signs, but there are clear red flags. Watch for teachers who call other Muslims disbelievers, preach hatred of all non-Muslims, insist only their small group is right, push secrecy, tell you to cut off your family or glorify violence. New converts are sometimes targeted because they're eager and still learning. Stick to local mosques and qualified, accountable teachers.

Why converts are targeted

This isn't meant to scare you. But extremist recruiters know that new Muslims are often sincere, a bit lonely and not yet able to check what they're told. They offer belonging, certainty and a sense of purpose, then slowly pull people away from everyone else. Knowing the pattern is the best protection.

Red flags to watch for

  • Takfir: calling ordinary Muslims, scholars or rulers "kafir." The Prophet ﷺ warned that when a man calls his brother an unbeliever, it returns to one of them (Sahih Muslim 60).
  • Hatred of all non-Muslims: telling you your parents, coworkers or neighbors are enemies.
  • "Only we are right": every mosque and scholar is "deviant" except their channel.
  • Secrecy: private chats, encrypted groups, "don't tell your imam or family."
  • Cutting off family and friends: Islam commands kindness to parents, even non-Muslim ones, and good friendships can stay. See Can I keep my non-Muslim friends after becoming Muslim?
  • Glorifying violence: praising attackers, sharing combat videos, talking about "real jihad."
  • Anonymous "sheikhs": no name, no teachers, no community, but lots of confidence.
  • Pressure to travel: urging you to go abroad, often in secret.

What healthy Islam looks like

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Religion is very easy... So you should not be extremists" (Sahih al-Bukhari 39), and he warned that earlier peoples were destroyed by going to extremes in religion (Sunan an-Nasa'i 3057, graded sahih). Healthy teaching is balanced, merciful and patient with questions.

Where to get help

If something feels off, talk to a trusted imam, a convert support group or a friend you trust. You don't owe any online group your loyalty, and leaving a chat is always okay. In the UK, concerns about radicalization can be raised through the government's Prevent program, and some US communities have local prevention and support services. If anyone encourages violence or travel to a conflict zone, contact the police: 911 (USA), 999 (UK) or 112 (EU) in an emergency.

Key points
  • Takfir, hatred and secrecy are major warning signs.
  • Islam never asks you to cut off your family or harm innocent people.
  • Learn from accountable, local, qualified teachers.
  • Report anyone who encourages violence to the police.
Tip: A simple test: if a teacher makes you feel more angry, isolated and superior after every video, step back. Good knowledge makes you calmer, kinder and closer to people.
