How do I stop my hijab from slipping?

To stop your hijab from slipping, wear a grippy underscarf, choose a fabric with some texture, and pin it at the right points. Most slipping comes from smooth hair, slippery fabric or a loose base. Fix the base first, and the scarf on top usually stays put all day.
Start with a solid base
The underscarf (also called a cap or bonnet) is the foundation. A cotton or jersey tube cap grips your hair and gives the outer scarf something to hold on to. If your scarf keeps sliding back, the underscarf is often the missing piece.
- Tie your hair in a low or mid bun so it doesn't push the scarf back. Keep it modest and not shaped to look tall on purpose. See Is the hair bun under hijab haram?
- Pull the underscarf well onto your forehead and down over the nape so it can't creep up.
- Silky, freshly washed hair slides more. A light braid helps.
Pick a fabric that grips
Jersey and crinkle cotton hold well. Silk, satin and some chiffons look lovely but slide easily, so pair them with a cotton underscarf. If a favorite scarf always slips, a tiny dab of fabric "grip" (or simply a textured underscarf) can save it.
Pin smarter, not more
- Under the chin: one safety pin or a small magnet keeps the front closed.
- At the side of the head: a straight pin just above the ear locks the scarf to the underscarf so it doesn't rotate.
- At the back: pin the tails or tuck them so their weight doesn't drag the scarf down.
- Magnetic pins are kind to delicate fabric and are easy for beginners.
Keep the neck and ears covered as you pin; a slipping scarf often exposes them first. See Can my neck or ears show when I wear hijab?
Styles that stay put
Wrap styles that cross over the head and fasten at the side are more secure than a scarf simply draped and pinned under the chin. For sport, a one-piece slip-on (sports) hijab barely moves. If the front of your scarf hangs loose, let it fall over your chest; that also helps the weight sit evenly. See Does my hijab have to cover my chest?
- A grippy underscarf solves most slipping.
- Jersey and textured cotton stay in place better than silk.
- Pin at the chin, above the ear and at the back.
- Wrapped styles and one-piece hijabs move less.
