Teach them by example: be kind, warm and respectful to your non-Muslim family yourself, and explain that Islam commands it. Children copy what they see. When they watch you hug Grandma, call your brother and help at family events, they learn that loving family is part of being Muslim.

Islam tells us to honor family, whatever their faith

The Quran says that even if parents push their child to leave Allah's way, the child should not obey them in that, but should still treat them well:

وَصَاحِبْهُمَا فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا مَعْرُوفًا "...but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness." Quran 31:15

When Asma bint Abi Bakr's mother, who was not Muslim, came to visit, Asma asked the Prophet ﷺ whether she should keep good relations with her. He said yes, keep good relations with your mother (Sahih al-Bukhari 2620). Share these stories with your kids. They show that kindness to family is worship, not a compromise.

Explain differences without making anyone "the bad guy"

Kids will notice that Grandpa drinks wine or that their aunt goes to church. Keep the explanation simple and calm: "We are Muslim, and we pray to Allah. Grandpa believes something different. We still love him very much." Avoid phrases like "they are wrong" or talk about hell in front of children. That can make them afraid of their own relatives or rude to them. Practical habits that build respect

  • Greet properly. Teach them to say hello, hug grandparents, and say thank you for gifts. See Can my kids get Christmas presents from their non-Muslim grandparents?
  • Polite "no thank you". If food isn't halal, they can decline kindly without commenting on what others eat.
  • Make dua for them. Let your kids hear you ask Allah to guide and bless their grandparents. See Can I make dua for my non-Muslim family?
  • Share good things. Invite relatives to Eid, bring them sweets, and let the kids make cards for their birthdays.
  • No mocking. Don't laugh at relatives' beliefs at home either. Kids repeat what they hear.

When relatives say hurtful things

Sometimes a relative criticizes Islam in front of the kids. Stay calm. Later, explain to your children that people sometimes misunderstand Islam, and that our response is good manners and patience. If a relative repeatedly undermines your parenting, talk to them privately as an adult. Respect doesn't mean letting someone teach your kids against their faith, but it does mean handling it gently.

Key points
  • Islam commands kindness to non-Muslim parents and relatives (Quran 31:15).
  • Children learn respect mostly by watching you.
  • Explain differences simply, without fear or blame.
  • Handle disagreements with relatives privately and politely.
Tip: Before a family visit, talk with your kids for two minutes about what to expect: "Grandma might offer ham; we just say 'no thank you, Grandma' and smile." A little preparation prevents awkward moments.
