How do I tell my teacher I'm fasting?

Just tell your teacher simply and calmly: "I'm fasting for Ramadan, so I won't eat or drink from dawn to sunset." Most teachers in the UK, Europe and the USA have taught Muslim students before and are happy to help. A short, friendly heads-up at the start of Ramadan is all you need.

Why it helps to tell them

You don't have to announce your fast to everyone. But a teacher who knows can avoid awkward moments: offering you snacks in class, wondering why you skipped lunch, or worrying when you look tired in the afternoon. It also makes it easier to ask for small adjustments, like sitting out a hard PE session. The Prophet ﷺ described fasting as "a shield" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1894), and being open about it can protect you from pressure too.

What to say

Keep it short and positive. You could say:

  • "Ramadan starts this week. I'll be fasting from dawn until sunset for about a month, so I won't be eating at lunch."
  • "I'm fine to do normal lessons. Could I take it a bit easier in PE if I feel weak?"
  • "If I need to break my fast at sunset during an after-school club, is it okay if I bring a date and some water?"

Say it before or after class, or send a short email. If you're under 18, a parent or guardian can write the note for you. Ramadan 2027 is expected to start around 8 February 2027, so the fasts will be fairly short in Europe and North America.

Asking for reasonable adjustments

Islam doesn't want fasting to harm you. Allah says about Ramadan:

يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ بِكُمُ ٱلْيُسْرَ وَلَا يُرِيدُ بِكُمُ ٱلْعُسْرَ "Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship." Quran 2:185

So it's fine to ask for things like a lighter PE session, a quiet place to rest at lunch, or a spot to pray Dhuhr. Many schools and universities already have Ramadan guidance for staff. If you're a young or new Muslim

Fasting becomes an obligation at puberty. Younger children may fast part of the day for practice, and nobody should be pushed beyond what is healthy. If you are a new Muslim, it's okay to tell your teacher it's your first Ramadan; they may be curious and kind. If you feel ill, stop fasting and make up the day later. That's part of the religion, not a failure.

Handling questions

Classmates and teachers may ask, "Not even water?" Answer with a smile: "Not even water, but it's only until sunset, and I eat a big meal before dawn." You don't need to explain everything. It's also a good moment to mention that you may need a few minutes to pray. See How do I pray at school or university?

Key points
  • A short, friendly message at the start of Ramadan is enough.
  • Telling your teacher avoids awkward moments and helps them support you.
  • You can ask for small adjustments for PE, rest and prayer.
  • If you feel ill, you may break the fast and make it up later.
Tip: Bring a few dates to share with your class on the last day of Ramadan or at Eid. It turns a question about fasting into a warm moment everyone remembers.
