How do I wear hijab with glasses?

Most sisters wear their glasses over the hijab, with the arms resting on top of the scarf, or slide them through the fabric so they sit on the underscarf. Both are fine. The best method depends on your frames, your scarf fabric and whether you get headaches from pressure.

Option 1: glasses over the scarf

This is the easiest way. Put your hijab on as usual, then put your glasses on top so the arms rest on the scarf over your ears.

  • Pros: quick to take on and off; you don't disturb your scarf.
  • Cons: the glasses can sit a little crooked or slide on slippery fabric, and they may press the scarf against your ears.

Option 2: glasses under the outer scarf

Put on your underscarf first, then your glasses, then wrap the outer scarf over the arms of the glasses.

  • Pros: glasses sit straight and stable, and the outer scarf looks smooth.
  • Cons: harder to remove quickly, and some people find it tight.

A middle way: make a tiny gap in a jersey scarf just above each ear by easing the fabric apart (not cutting it), and slide the arms of the glasses through to rest on the underscarf.

Comfort fixes

  • Headaches or sore ears: wear thinner layers over the ears, or choose frames with flexible or adjustable arms.
  • Glasses sliding: a jersey or cotton scarf grips better than silk. An optician can tighten the arms for you.
  • Hearing aids too: place them before the underscarf, and keep a loose layer so they don't whistle.
  • Sunglasses: the same methods work; many sisters simply rest them on top.

Glasses, wudu and prayer

You'll take your glasses off for wudu anyway, so the "over the scarf" method is often easier during the day. In prayer, you can keep your glasses on, but many people take them off in sujood so the frames don't press into the face and stop the forehead and nose touching the ground. See How do I make wudu?

Glasses come in many styles that suit a scarf, from thin metal frames to bold colors. See Can hijab be stylish and fashionable?

Key points
  • Glasses over the scarf are quickest; under the outer scarf is most stable.
  • Jersey and cotton keep glasses in place better than silk.
  • Adjustable or flexible frames reduce ear pressure.
  • Keep ears and neck covered when adjusting frames.
Tip: Take your scarf with you when you buy new frames. The optician can adjust the arms while you're wearing your hijab, so the fit is right from day one.
