How long is the Day of Judgement in Islam?

The Day of Judgement is described as lasting 50,000 years. The Quran and an authentic hadith both give this length. Yet scholars explain that for sincere believers it will feel very short, while for those who rejected Allah it will feel endless.
The 50,000 years in the Quran
Surah al-Ma'arij describes the Day of Resurrection with a clear number:
Many classical commentators understood this verse as describing the Day of Judgement itself. The Prophet ﷺ confirmed it: speaking about people who refused to pay zakat, he described their punishment "on a day the length of which is fifty thousand years" until judgement between people is finished (Sahih Muslim 987).
Why it feels different for different people
Time on that Day isn't like time on earth. The length is real, but the experience depends on a person's faith and deeds. Scholars cite a narration that for the believer the Day will be made as light as the time it takes to pray one obligatory prayer. Its chain is discussed, but the meaning fits many verses that promise believers safety and ease on that Day. Others will stand in fear, with the sun brought close, sweating according to their deeds (Sahih Muslim 2864).
What happens during that Day
- Resurrection: everyone is raised and gathered on one plain.
- The long wait: people stand until judgement begins, and they seek intercession from the prophets.
- The reckoning: books of deeds are given, the scales are set up, and each person is questioned.
- The bridge (Sirat): people cross over Hell toward Paradise at different speeds.

Shade on a hot Day
The Prophet ﷺ named seven kinds of people whom Allah will shade on the Day when there is no shade but His: among them a just leader, a young person raised in worship, someone whose heart is attached to the mosque, and someone who gives charity so quietly that his left hand doesn't know what his right hand gave (Sahih al-Bukhari 660). That hadith turns the scary number into a to-do list. The journey starts earlier, in the grave. See What happens in the grave in Islam?
- The Day of Judgement is 50,000 years long (Quran 70:4).
- Sahih Muslim 987 confirms the same length.
- For sincere believers it will pass quickly and lightly.
- Good deeds now earn shade and ease on that Day.
