It depends on your school and how long you plan to stay. While you're on the road, you can shorten for as long as the journey lasts. Once you arrive, most scholars (Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali) say you shorten only if you plan to stay less than about 4 days; the Hanafi school allows shortening if you plan to stay less than 15 days. If you don't know when you'll leave, you can usually keep shortening.

On the move vs. staying put

The question is really about staying somewhere. As long as you're actually traveling (driving, flying, moving from city to city), you're a traveler and can shorten the whole way. The limits below kick in when you reach a place and settle there for a while, like a hotel for a conference or a relative's house for the holidays.

What the four schools say

  • Hanafi: if you intend to stay 15 days or more in one place, you pray in full from your arrival. Less than 15 days, keep shortening.
  • Maliki and Shafi'i: if you intend to stay 4 full days or more, you pray in full. The day you arrive and the day you leave aren't counted.
  • Hanbali: if you intend to stay more than 4 days (more than 21 prayers), you pray in full.

Some scholars, including Ibn Taymiyyah, set no fixed number: you're a traveler as long as you haven't settled and are there only for a temporary purpose. Many students who move abroad for a semester ask about this. See Can I study abroad as a Muslim?

The evidence behind the numbers

Anas said they traveled with the Prophet ﷺ from Medina to Mecca and prayed two rakat until they returned, and they stayed in Mecca for ten days (Sahih al-Bukhari 1081). Ibn Abbas reported that the Prophet ﷺ once stayed nineteen days shortening his prayers (Sahih al-Bukhari 1080). Scholars read these reports differently, which is why the schools reached different limits. Each view rests on real evidence, so follow the one you've learned or your local mosque, and don't be harsh on people who differ.

When you don't know how long you'll stay

Sometimes you're stuck waiting: a delayed visa, a sick relative, a job that might end any day. If you keep thinking "I'll leave in a day or two", most schools let you keep shortening. The Hanafis, Malikis and Hanbalis allow it for as long as the uncertainty lasts, while the Shafi'i school caps it at 18 days.

وَإِذَا ضَرَبْتُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَلَيْسَ عَلَيْكُمْ جُنَاحٌ أَن تَقْصُرُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ "And when you travel throughout the land, there is no blame upon you for shortening the prayer..." Quran 4:101

When you're back in your hometown, you pray in full right away. For shortening and combining in the air, see Can I pray on a plane? On organized group trips, plan this with your group. See Can I go on school trips as a Muslim?

Key points
  • While actually on the road, you can shorten the whole journey.
  • Staying 15+ days (Hanafi) or about 4+ days (Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali): pray in full.
  • Unsure when you'll leave: keep shortening (Shafi'i: up to 18 days).
  • Back home: pray in full immediately.
Tip: Decide your plan before you arrive. Count the days of your stay, check your school's rule, and you'll know from the first prayer whether to shorten or pray in full.
