Yes, joining a lottery syndicate or office pool is haram. Pooling money does not change what it is. Each person pays a stake for a chance at a prize, which is gambling. You can decline politely, find another way to join in the fun and, if you ever win, keep only what you put in and give the rest to charity.

A pool is still gambling

The Quran calls gambling (maysir) part of Satan's handiwork:

Intoxicants, gambling, idols, and drawing lots for decisions are all evil of Satan's handiwork. So shun them so you may be successful. Satan's plan is to stir up hostility and hatred between you with intoxicants and gambling and to prevent you from remembering Allah and praying. Will you not then abstain?" Quran 5:90-91

In a syndicate, everyone pays in, a ticket is bought, and the prize goes to those who happen to win. Each person risks losing their money for a chance to gain more, so the structure is the same as a single ticket. Sharing the cost and the possible win with colleagues does not turn it into something else. See Can I still buy lottery tickets as a Muslim?

Small amounts, same ruling

"It's only two pounds" or "everyone is joining" does not change the ruling, because the rule depends on the structure, not the amount. The Prophet ﷺ taught that even saying to a friend, "Come, let me gamble with you," requires giving something in charity (Sahih al-Bukhari 6301). That shows how seriously Islam treats even the invitation.

How to decline politely

You do not need a lecture or an argument. Try something like, "No thanks, I don't gamble because of my faith, but I hope you win!" Other ideas:

  • Join the celebration or coffee break without paying into the pool.
  • Suggest a free prize draw or a quiz where no one pays a stake.
  • Keep it friendly and avoid judging colleagues who play.

Religious belief is protected in workplaces in both the UK and the USA, and most employers and colleagues respect a polite request. See Can I go to a work happy hour if I don't drink?

If you already joined or won

Stop taking part and ask Allah for forgiveness. If a pool you joined as a Muslim wins, scholars generally advise taking back only the money you paid in and giving the rest to charity, without expecting reward. For prizes won before you became Muslim, scholars have a different view.

Gambling can also hide in other places, such as fantasy sports. See Is fantasy football haram?

Key points
  • A lottery syndicate or office pool is gambling, even if the money is shared.
  • The amount does not change the ruling (Quran 5:90-91).
  • Say no kindly and suggest a free alternative.
  • If you win, take back your stake and give the rest to charity.
Tip: Say your answer before the collection starts, in a friendly tone. It is much easier to decline once than to explain it every week.
