Is April Fools' Day haram?

It depends on the joke. April Fools' Day itself isn't a religious festival, so there's nothing wrong with the date. The problem is the custom of fooling people with lies. Islam allows humor and playful fun, but forbids lying, even as a joke, and forbids frightening or humiliating people. Harmless wordplay and surprises are fine; false stories that trick or scare someone are not.

What April Fools' Day is

On 1 April, people in many countries play tricks on each other and media outlets publish fake stories. Where the tradition began is unclear, and it has no religious meaning. So the question isn't about the day, but about what we say and do on it.

What Islam says about lies and jokes

The Quran tells believers to avoid false speech:

وَٱجْتَنِبُوا۟ قَوْلَ ٱلزُّورِ "...and shun words of falsehood." Quran 22:30

The Prophet ﷺ had a sense of humor. When the Companions asked, "You joke with us?" he answered, "Indeed I do not say except what is true" (Jami at-Tirmidhi 1990). He also said, "Woe to him who tells things, speaking falsely, to make people laugh thereby. Woe to him!" (Sunan Abi Dawud 4990). That is the heart of the matter: humor is fine, but not at the cost of truth. See What does the Quran say about lying?

Frightening and humiliating people

There's a second concern. A man in the time of the Prophet ﷺ had his rope taken while he slept and woke up alarmed, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "It is not lawful for a Muslim to frighten a Muslim" (Sunan Abi Dawud 5004). So pranks that cause fear, hurt feelings, embarrassment or damage aren't acceptable either, however funny they look on video. See Is it haram to make prank videos?

Pranks that are fine, and ones to avoid

Usually fine:

  • Wordplay and riddles: puns, silly rhymes and "gotcha" questions that don't state a falsehood as fact.
  • Clearly silly humor: a funny mug, an odd-shaped biscuit or a message everyone knows is a joke.
  • Gentle surprises: a small gift left on a desk, with no scares and no false story.

Best avoided:

  • Fake bad news: a job loss, an accident, a death, a breakup or a pregnancy.
  • Fake emergencies, such as a missed flight or a lost passport.
  • Anything that frightens, humiliates or damages property.
  • Fake news posts or stories that many people could believe.

If you're pranked or invited to join

If a colleague or classmate tries a trick on you, stay calm and gracious. You don't need to lecture; a smile and "Good one, but I'll skip lying" is enough. If your children want to prank at school, show them funny ideas that don't need a lie.

Key points
  • April Fools' Day isn't religious; the question is lying and harm.
  • Joking is fine, but not with falsehood (Jami at-Tirmidhi 1990; Sunan Abi Dawud 4990).
  • Don't frighten or humiliate anyone (Sunan Abi Dawud 5004).
  • Choose wordplay and gentle surprises over fake stories.
Tip: A good test before you joke is "Will the person laugh with me once they know?" If they might feel fooled, hurt or scared, leave it.
