Is archery sunnah?

Yes, archery is one of the clearest sunnahs of strength and skill. The Prophet ﷺ encouraged it, praised it and warned against giving it up after learning it. Scholars generally see it as recommended rather than compulsory, so you aren't sinful if you never pick up a bow, but taking it up with a good intention can be rewarded.
What the hadith say about archery
The Prophet ﷺ once passed some men of the tribe of Aslam who were practising. He told them, "Practice archery as your father Isma'il was a great archer," and when they hesitated because he was backing one side, he said, "Throw, and I am with all of you" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2899). In a sermon he said, "Prepare to meet them with as much strength as you can afford," and then repeated three times, "Beware, strength consists in archery" (Sahih Muslim 1917). He was explaining this verse:
In its original setting this was about defending the community. Scholars apply the lesson to peacetime too: be strong, skilled and ready, and don't neglect useful abilities.
A warning about giving it up
Uqba ibn Amir kept walking between the targets even when he was old. When people said it must be hard on him, he explained that he had heard the Prophet ﷺ say that whoever learns archery and then gives it up "is not from us" (Sahih Muslim 1919). Scholars read this as a strong push to keep up a skill once you have it, not as a statement that someone has left Islam.
Archery was also simple fun
Anas ibn Malik said that after praying Maghrib with the Prophet ﷺ, they used to shoot arrows, and each of them could still see where his arrow landed (Sunan Abi Dawud 416). So archery was both training and a pleasant way to spend an evening. See Which sports did the Prophet Muhammad encourage?
Is it a "sunnah" today?
In the narrow sense, a sunnah is something the Prophet ﷺ did regularly as worship, like the two units of prayer before Fajr. Archery is a sunnah in the wider sense: a skill he encouraged and praised. It isn't an obligation, but it's a lovely way to follow his example while building focus, patience and steady breathing. Some scholars extend the same encouragement to other useful skills, such as marksmanship. See Can Muslims do target shooting?
Clubs and ranges across Europe and the USA run beginner courses and usually lend the equipment. A few reminders:
- Follow range safety rules and never shoot toward people.
- Don't use a living animal as a target. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do not make anything having life as a target" (Sahih Muslim 1957).
- Check prayer times before you go. A quiet corner of the field is enough to pray.
Archery pairs well with the other skill he praised, riding. See Is horse riding sunnah?
- The Prophet ﷺ praised archery and said strength consists in it.
- Giving it up after learning it is strongly discouraged, but it isn't a major sin.
- It is recommended, not compulsory.
- Never use a living creature as a target.
