Yes, most baby formula is halal. Standard formulas are made from cow's or goat's milk, plant oils, vitamins and minerals, and they rarely contain pork or alcohol. If you want extra certainty, check the label or choose a halal-certified brand.

Formula feeding is allowed

Some new Muslim mothers worry that formula is somehow "less Islamic" than breastfeeding. It isn't. The Quran recommends breastfeeding for up to two years, but it also allows other ways of feeding a baby:

وَإِنْ أَرَدتُّمْ أَن تَسْتَرْضِعُوٓا۟ أَوْلَـٰدَكُمْ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْكُمْ إِذَا سَلَّمْتُم مَّآ ءَاتَيْتُم بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ "...And if you wish to have your children nursed by a substitute, there is no blame upon you as long as you give payment according to what is acceptable..." Quran 2:233

Scholars apply the same ease to formula. Whether you can't breastfeed, choose to combine, or stop early for health or work reasons, feeding your baby formula is not a sin. See How long should a Muslim mother breastfeed?

What is actually in formula

  • Milk proteins: skimmed milk, whey and casein from cows or goats. Milk from these animals is halal.
  • Lactose: milk sugar, also halal.
  • Plant oils: sunflower, rapeseed, coconut or palm oil.
  • DHA: from fish oil or algae, both halal.
  • Vitamins and minerals: added in tiny amounts.

Whey is a by-product of cheese making, and some scholars ask about the enzymes used. Most scholars treat it like cheese and consider it halal. See Is cheese halal?

Ingredients worth checking

A few additives can, rarely, come from animal sources:

  • Vitamin D3: usually from lanolin (sheep's wool), which most scholars accept.
  • Gelatin or animal-derived emulsifiers: uncommon in infant formula, but check toddler milks and specialist products.
  • Vitamin carriers: sometimes contain traces of alcohol used in processing; most scholars overlook tiny, non-intoxicating traces.

For coded additives on the tin, see Are E-numbers halal? If you're unsure, email the manufacturer. Many large brands sell halal-certified versions in Muslim-majority countries and will tell you about their sources.

Don't let doubt stress you out

The Prophet ﷺ said that the halal is clear and the haram is clear, and between them are doubtful matters; whoever avoids the doubtful protects their religion (Sahih al-Bukhari 52). Avoiding doubt is good, but it doesn't mean every unknown ingredient is haram. Do reasonable checks, then feed your baby with a calm heart. Always follow your doctor's or health visitor's advice on which formula suits your baby's needs, especially for allergies or prematurity. Key points
  • Most formula is cow's or goat's milk based and halal.
  • The Quran allows feeding babies by means other than the mother.
  • Check vitamin D3, gelatin and emulsifier sources if unsure.
  • Follow medical advice on the right formula for your baby.
Tip: Save the manufacturer's reply about ingredient sources on your phone. Then you won't have to wonder again every time you buy a new tin at 2 a.m.
