Is birthday cake halal?

Yes, usually, as long as the ingredients are halal. A cake made from flour, sugar, eggs, butter and milk is fine. The things to check are gelatin, lard and alcohol-based flavouring, which can hide in shop-bought and party cakes. Eating a slice at a non-Muslim friend's party is normally fine too, because it's food, not worship.
What makes a cake halal
In Islam, food is lawful by default. Allah tells us to enjoy what is good and lawful:
The Quran names what is forbidden: carrion, blood, pork and what is slaughtered in the name of anything other than Allah (Quran 2:173), as well as intoxicants (Quran 5:90). So a cake is halal unless it contains one of those, or something made from them.
Ingredients to watch for
- Gelatin: found in mousse cakes, cheesecake, glazes, jelly toppings and marshmallow decorations. It is often made from pork. Scholars differ on whether gelatin that has been chemically transformed becomes lawful, but many Muslims avoid it unless it is labelled halal, fish or plant-based.
- Lard or animal shortening: sometimes used in pastry, pie crusts and cheap frostings. Check the label for "lard" or "animal fat".
- Alcohol: rum or liqueur soaked into the sponge, as in tiramisu or rum cake, is a clear no. Vanilla extract is a separate question. See Is vanilla extract haram because it has alcohol?
- Red and pink colouring: carmine (E120) comes from insects, and scholars differ on it. Many people simply choose icing coloured with plant-based dyes.
A "suitable for vegetarians" label rules out gelatin and lard, but not alcohol, so it only helps up to a point.
Eating cake at a non-Muslim party
If the cake is homemade or from a bakery and nothing looks doubtful, enjoy it. If you aren't sure, a friendly question like "Does the cake have gelatin or alcohol in it?" is perfectly normal. The Prophet ﷺ said that the lawful is clear, the unlawful is clear, and in between are doubtful matters; whoever avoids them protects his religion (Sahih al-Bukhari 52).
If you can't find out, skip the cake without fuss and take fruit or tea instead. Nobody needs a speech. See How do I politely turn down non-halal food?
Birthdays themselves
Scholars differ on whether celebrating birthdays is acceptable, and that is a separate question from the ingredients. Many see a simple party as a custom, while some prefer to avoid it. See Can I celebrate my birthday after becoming Muslim?
- A cake made from halal ingredients is halal.
- Watch for gelatin, lard, alcohol and insect-based colouring.
- When in doubt, ask the host or leave it (Sahih al-Bukhari 52).
- Whether to celebrate birthdays is a separate question on which scholars differ.
