No, traditional black pudding is not halal. It is made from blood, usually pig's blood, mixed with fat and oats. The Quran forbids flowing blood, and pork is forbidden too. Some halal butchers sell a blood-free "black pudding" style product, which is fine if it's properly certified.

What black pudding is

Black pudding is a classic part of a full English, Scottish or Irish breakfast. It is a sausage made from animal blood, fat (often pork fat or suet), oatmeal or barley, onions and spices. In the UK and Ireland the blood is usually from pigs; in other countries (boudin noir in France, morcilla in Spain, blood sausage in Germany and the USA) it may be pig, cow or sheep blood. White pudding has no blood but often contains pork fat.

Why it's forbidden

The Quran names blood alongside pork:

حُرِّمَتْ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلْمَيْتَةُ وَٱلدَّمُ وَلَحْمُ ٱلْخِنزِيرِ "Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine..." Quran 5:3

Another verse specifies "blood shed forth" (Quran 6:145), meaning blood that flows out of the animal. Scholars agree this flowing blood may not be eaten, even from a halal-slaughtered cow or sheep. Halal slaughter is designed to drain this blood from the body. See How is halal meat slaughtered? So black pudding has two problems: the blood itself and, usually, the pig. See Why can't Muslims eat pork?

What about the small amount of blood in meat?

You don't need to worry about the little bit of blood left in properly slaughtered meat, or the red juice in a steak (which is mostly water and protein). Scholars agree that this leftover blood is excused. The ruling is about deliberately collecting blood and eating it.

Breakfast out and halal alternatives

  • Cafés and hotels: a full breakfast plate often has black pudding, bacon and pork sausages next to the eggs. Ask for a plate without them, or check whether the same pan is used. See Is it haram to eat food that touched pork?
  • Halal "black pudding": some UK halal brands sell a version made without blood, using lamb or beef and spices. Check the ingredients and the certification.
  • Vegetarian versions: made with beans, oats and spices; usually halal if no wine or gelatin is added.
Key points
  • Black pudding is made from blood, usually pig's blood.
  • Flowing blood is forbidden in the Quran (5:3, 6:145).
  • Leftover blood in halal meat is not a problem.
  • Certified blood-free or vegetarian versions are fine.
Tip: When ordering a full breakfast, try "Full breakfast, but no bacon, sausage or black pudding, please." Most cafés will add extra beans, mushrooms or hash browns instead.
