Yes, caviar is halal according to the majority of scholars. Caviar is fish eggs, usually from sturgeon, and the Quran makes food from the sea lawful. Hanafi scholars, who only allow fish from the sea, also generally accept sturgeon as a fish. Just make sure nothing non-halal is added.

Seafood is broadly lawful

The Quran gives a wide permission for what comes from the sea:

أُحِلَّ لَكُمْ صَيْدُ ٱلْبَحْرِ وَطَعَامُهُۥ مَتَـٰعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِلسَّيَّارَةِ "Lawful to you is game from the sea and its food as provision for you and the travelers..." Quran 5:96

When asked about the sea, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Its water is pure and its dead are lawful" (Sunan Abi Dawud 83; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 69). Fish do not need to be slaughtered, so their eggs (roe) follow the same ruling as the fish. See Can I eat shrimp and other seafood?

What about the sturgeon?

Real caviar comes from sturgeon. The Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools allow almost all sea creatures, so for them there is no question. The Hanafi school is stricter and allows only fish; most Hanafi scholars count the sturgeon as a fish, so its roe is allowed too. You may read online that sturgeon is forbidden because it has no ordinary scales; that view comes from Shia jurisprudence, not from the four Sunni schools. Roe from salmon (ikura), lumpfish, trout or cod, often sold as "caviar" in supermarkets, is halal for everyone.

Things to check on the jar

  • Ingredients: real caviar is just roe and salt, sometimes with a preservative such as borax in older recipes. Pure roe and salt are fine.
  • Serving extras: at a restaurant, caviar may come with blinis, crème fraîche, vodka shots or Champagne. Skip the alcohol; the caviar itself is still fine.
  • Imitation pearls: cheap imitation caviar pearls are sometimes set with gelatin, which may be pork. Check the label. See Can I still eat gummy bears as a Muslim?

A word about luxury

Caviar is expensive. Islam does not forbid enjoying fine food you can afford, but it warns against waste and showing off. If it's a once-in-a-while treat, enjoy it with gratitude and a "Bismillah". If you want the bigger picture of what Muslims can and can't eat, see What can Muslims eat?

Key points
  • Caviar is fish roe, and seafood is lawful (Quran 5:96).
  • Most Hanafi scholars also accept sturgeon as a fish.
  • Salmon, trout and lumpfish roe are halal for every school.
  • Avoid the vodka or Champagne often served alongside.
Tip: If caviar is offered at a work event or wedding, you can say yes to the caviar and "just water, thanks" to the drink. No long explanation needed.
