Is cheating in online games haram?

Yes, cheating against other players in online games is generally haram. Aimbots, wallhacks and exploits deceive real people, ruin their fun and break the rules you agreed to. Cheat codes in a single-player game, where nobody else is affected, are a different and much lighter matter.
Why cheating matters even in a game
An online match is a small agreement: everyone plays by the same rules. When you sign up, you also accept the game's terms of service. Islam takes agreements seriously:
The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever cheats us is not one of us" (Sahih Muslim 102), and described a true Muslim as someone "from whose tongue and hand the Muslims are safe" (Sahih al-Bukhari 10). Ruining someone's match on purpose, making them lose rank or waste hours, is harm done with your hand, even if it's through a keyboard.
What counts as cheating
- Hacks and mods that give an unfair edge in multiplayer: aimbots, wallhacks, speed hacks.
- Exploiting bugs in ranked or competitive play to win.
- Account boosting (paying someone to rank up your account, or being paid to do it), which usually breaks the rules and misleads other players.
- Smurfing to bully beginners, and griefing teammates on purpose.
- Cheating in tournaments with prize money, which means taking money you didn't earn. That's more serious.
Games with paid random rewards raise their own questions. See Are loot boxes haram?
What's fine
Cheat codes and mods in a single-player game, or on a private server where everyone agrees, don't deceive or harm anyone. Most scholars see this as permissible, though it's still worth asking whether it breaks the game's terms. Learning strategies, watching guides and practising are not cheating at all; that's just getting good. For gaming in general, see Can I still play video games as a Muslim?
Honesty is the same everywhere
A habit of cutting corners in games can spill into school and work. The same principle that rules out copying in an exam rules out an aimbot in a ranked match. See Is it haram to cheat on exams?
- Cheating against real players is deception and harm.

- Single-player cheat codes that affect nobody are generally fine.
