Is clickbait haram?

It depends: misleading clickbait is haram, but a catchy, honest headline is fine. If your title or thumbnail promises something the content doesn't deliver, you're deceiving people to get their clicks. Making a headline interesting, curious or bold is allowed as long as it's true.

Where the line is

Clickbait covers a wide range. Some of it is simply good writing: "5 mistakes new Muslims make in their first Ramadan" is catchy and accurate. The problem is when the hook is false:

  • "Scholar CONFIRMS music is halal!" when he said nothing of the sort.
  • A thumbnail of a crying celebrity who isn't in the video.
  • "You won't believe what happened at the mosque" when nothing happened.
  • Fake "breaking news" or shocking claims to farm views.

These are lies in the form of headlines and images. The Prophet ﷺ passed a pile of food that was wet underneath but dry on top, and said, "Whoever cheats us is not one of us" (Sahih Muslim 102). A shiny headline over empty content is the online version of that dry top layer.

Lying for attention or laughs

Some people think a bit of exaggeration doesn't count because it's "just for engagement". The Prophet ﷺ said, "Woe to the one who speaks and lies to make people laugh. Woe to him, woe to him" (Sunan Abi Dawud 4990). If lying to entertain people is condemned, lying to make money from them is more serious. Spreading false claims also makes you share the sin of everyone who passes them on. See Is it a sin to share fake news online as a Muslim?

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَقُولُوا۟ قَوْلًا سَدِيدًا "O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice." Quran 33:70

Honest hooks that still work

You don't need to lie to grow. Good creators use:

  • Curiosity with a real payoff: ask the question your video truly answers.
  • Specific numbers and results that are accurate.
  • Thumbnails from the actual content, not unrelated shocking images.
  • Strong opinions, clearly labelled as your opinion.

Viewers trust honest channels more, and trust brings long-term growth. If you're building a channel, see Can I start a YouTube channel as a Muslim?

Earnings from clickbait

Ad money earned from deceptive views is tainted by the deception, and many scholars advise giving such earnings away and repenting. Earnings from honest, catchy content are fine. See Can I make money from YouTube ads as a Muslim?

Key points
  • Misleading titles and thumbnails are a form of lying and cheating.
  • Catchy headlines are fine if the content delivers on them.
  • Exaggerating for laughs or views is still lying.
  • Honest hooks build trust and lasting growth.
Tip: Before you post, ask yourself: "Would a viewer feel tricked after watching?" If the answer is yes, rewrite the title. A quick honest check like this keeps your content clean and your audience loyal.
