Yes, doxxing is haram. Publishing someone's private details, like their home address, workplace or phone number, to shame or target them violates their honor and privacy and can lead to real harm. Reporting a genuine danger to the police or a platform is different.

What doxxing is

Doxxing means digging up and posting someone's personal information, usually to punish them for something they said or did. Online mobs often then harass that person, their family or their employer. Even when the person did something wrong, Islam doesn't allow you to expose and endanger them this way.

Why Islam forbids it

The Quran forbids spying on people and backbiting them in the same verse:

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱجْتَنِبُوا۟ كَثِيرًا مِّنَ ٱلظَّنِّ إِنَّ بَعْضَ ٱلظَّنِّ إِثْمٌ ۖ وَلَا تَجَسَّسُوا۟ وَلَا يَغْتَب بَّعْضُكُم بَعْضًا "O you who have believed, avoid much assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other." Quran 49:12
  • People's honor is sacred. In his farewell sermon the Prophet ﷺ said that people's blood, property and honor are sacred to one another (Sahih al-Bukhari 67).
  • Covering faults is rewarded. He ﷺ said, "Whoever covers a Muslim, Allah will cover him in this world and the Hereafter" (Sahih Muslim 2699).
  • Harm is not allowed. Posting an address can lead to threats or violence, and you share the blame for what follows.

These protections apply to non-Muslims too. Islam's rules against harming people, lying and oppression are not limited to fellow Muslims.

"But they deserve it"

Anger at a racist post or a cruel video is understandable. Still, two wrongs don't make it right. Islam has a process for justice: evidence, authorities and courts, not crowds. You also rarely know the full story, and online mobs often target the wrong person. See Is it a sin to share fake news online as a Muslim?

What is allowed

  • Reporting a crime or a real threat to the police, a school or the platform.
  • Warning someone privately about a scammer or abuser so they can protect themselves, sharing only what's needed.
  • Speaking about wrongdoing of public figures in their public role, fairly and truthfully.

Scholars allow mentioning someone's faults in limited cases like these, where there's a real benefit and no extra harm. See Is it backbiting to complain about someone online?

Protect your own details

If someone threatens to dox you, screenshot it, report it, and contact the police if you feel unsafe. Keep your address and workplace off public profiles. See Can I use an anonymous account online as a Muslim?

Key points
  • Doxxing breaks the Quran's ban on spying and exposing people.
  • Honor and safety are sacred, for Muslims and non-Muslims.
  • Report real dangers to authorities instead of the crowd.
  • Covering others' faults brings Allah's cover for you.
Tip: Before sharing a "find this person" post, ask yourself: would I want my worst moment, plus my home address, shared like this? If not, scroll on or report it.
