Is DraftKings or FanDuel haram?

Yes, in general they are haram. Both companies run sportsbooks, which are plain betting, and paid daily fantasy contests, where you pay an entry fee and the prizes come from other players' fees. Most scholars treat both as gambling (maysir). The halal alternative is a free game with no cash at stake.
The sportsbook side
Betting money on the result of a match, a player's stats or a "parlay" is gambling, however it is packaged. The app, the odds and the sign-up offers do not change that. The Quran puts gambling next to intoxicants among the works of Satan (Quran 5:90).
What about paid daily fantasy?
In a paid daily fantasy contest you pay to enter, you pick a lineup, and the top players split a prize pool made largely of everyone's entry fees, minus the company's cut. You are risking your money on an uncertain result, and winners are paid from the losers' stakes.
Some people argue that skill makes it different from a lottery. Skill does help, but most scholars say the ruling does not depend on that: if you can lose your stake and the winner takes other people's money, it is still gambling. Why the Quran is so strict about it
Betting apps make this easy to see. They send alerts, offer "risk-free" bets and bonuses, and make it simple to deposit again. The Prophet ﷺ even said that whoever says to his friend, "Come, let me gamble with you," should give something in charity (Sahih al-Bukhari 6301). If merely inviting someone calls for atonement, joining in is much more serious. For the wider ruling, see Is sports betting haram?
Halal ways to enjoy it
- Free-to-play fantasy leagues. Many sports sites run leagues with no entry fee and no cash prize. Check that nothing requires a deposit.
- Friendly leagues. Play for a trophy, a funny title or bragging rights, and put no money in a pot.
- Prizes from the host. If one person buys a gift and nobody pays to enter, no one loses money.
- Just watching. The sport is fine without any stake.
If you already use these apps
Stop, ask Allah for forgiveness and make a firm intention not to return. Delete the apps, use the self-exclusion tools they and your state or country offer, and block gambling payments in your bank app. Ask an imam how to handle any balance or winnings. Many scholars advise giving winnings away in charity without expecting a reward for it. If you are struggling to stop, a free and confidential gambling helpline can support you as well.
