Is dropshipping haram?

No, dropshipping isn't haram in itself, but the usual setup needs a fix. The classic model sells products you don't own yet, which the Prophet ﷺ forbade. Scholars say it becomes halal if you act as the supplier's agent for a fee or commission, buy the item before you sell it, or use a properly structured advance order. Honest listings and halal products are a must.
The problem: selling what you don't own
In typical dropshipping, a customer pays you, and only then do you order the item from a supplier who ships it directly. At the moment of sale, you didn't own the product. A companion once asked the Prophet ﷺ about selling something to a customer and then buying it from the market. He replied, "Do not sell what you do not possess" (Sunan Abi Dawud 3503, sahih). Scholars explain that this protects buyers from deals that fall through, and sellers from promising what they can't deliver.
Ways to make it halal
Most contemporary scholars accept one of these structures:
- Agency (wakala): you act as the supplier's agent and market their products, earning a fixed fee or commission per sale. The supplier is the seller; you're the middleman. This is similar to affiliate marketing. See Can I earn money from affiliate links as a Muslim?
- Buy first, then sell: you purchase the item from the supplier (even if it stays in their warehouse) before you confirm the sale to your customer. Ownership passes to you first.
- Salam (advance order): the customer pays in full upfront for a clearly described item with a set delivery time. The Prophet ﷺ said whoever pays in advance should do so for a specified measure, weight and period (Sahih al-Bukhari 2240). Scholars differ on applying salam to factory goods, so many prefer agency.
In practice, agency is the simplest: be upfront with your supplier about your role and agree on your margin as a commission.
Honest listings matter as much as structure
Dropshipping has a reputation for fake reviews, edited photos, "limited stock" timers and hidden shipping times. All of that is cheating. The Prophet ﷺ said that when buyer and seller speak the truth and make things clear, their deal is blessed, and when they lie and hide things, the blessing is lost (Sahih al-Bukhari 2079). Show real photos, state honest delivery times, and handle returns fairly.
What you sell
A halal structure doesn't help if the products are haram: alcohol accessories, gambling items, immodest clothing marketed as such, or counterfeit brands. The same goes for promoting your store: avoid ads or influencer deals that cross Islamic lines. See Can I do sponsored posts and brand deals as a Muslim?
- Selling an item you don't own yet is the core issue with classic dropshipping.
- Acting as the supplier's agent for a commission is the most common halal fix.
- Buying before you sell, or a proper advance order, also works.
- No fake reviews, misleading photos or hidden delivery times.
