It depends on the type. Traditional eggnog is made with rum, brandy or bourbon, so it is not halal. Alcohol-free eggnog, such as many store-bought cartons made with milk, cream, eggs, sugar and nutmeg, is generally fine. Always read the label, because some versions are "spiked" or contain added rum flavouring.

Why traditional eggnog isn't halal

Eggnog is a creamy winter drink made from milk, cream, sugar, eggs and nutmeg. In its classic form, spirits like rum, brandy or bourbon are added, often in generous amounts. That puts it in the same category as other alcoholic drinks:

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَا ٱلْخَمْرُ وَٱلْمَيْسِرُ وَٱلْأَنصَابُ وَٱلْأَزْلَـٰمُ رِجْسٌ مِّنْ عَمَلِ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنِ فَٱجْتَنِبُوهُ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ "O believers! Intoxicants, gambling, idols, and drawing lots for decisions are all evil of Satan's handiwork. So shun them so you may be successful." Quran 5:90

Similar drinks include coquito, a Puerto Rican holiday drink traditionally made with rum, and advocaat, a Dutch egg liqueur. Both are alcoholic. For the basic ruling, see Can Muslims drink alcohol?

Alcohol-free eggnog

Many supermarket cartons sold during the holidays are made without alcohol, using only dairy, eggs, sugar and spices. These are generally fine. Just check:

  • The label for "spiked", "with rum", "with brandy" or an alcohol percentage.
  • The ingredients for "rum flavour" or other alcohol-based flavourings. Scholars differ on flavourings, so see Is vanilla extract haram because it has alcohol?
  • The source at a party. Ask the host, "Is this the alcohol-free one?" before you pour.

The Prophet ﷺ warned that some people from his community would drink wine while calling it by another name (Sunan Abi Dawud 3688). A festive name such as "nog" or "punch" doesn't change what is in the glass, so ask when in doubt.

Make it at home

You can make a delicious version in a few minutes. Warm milk and cream gently with a pinch of nutmeg and a cinnamon stick. Whisk egg yolks with sugar, add the warm milk slowly and heat gently, stirring until it thickens. Cool, then chill. Cooking the egg base also protects you from raw egg, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm" (Sunan Ibn Majah 2340). Use alcohol-free vanilla paste or a pinch of vanilla powder, or simply skip it.

Key points
  • Classic eggnog contains rum, brandy or bourbon and is not halal.
  • Many carton versions are alcohol-free, but check the label.
  • Watch for rum flavouring and "spiked" versions.
  • Homemade eggnog is easy; cook the egg base gently.
Tip: Serve it hot with a sprinkle of nutmeg in a mug. Many guests find it just as festive without any alcohol.
