Is fantasy football haram?

It depends. Playing fantasy football in a free league, just for fun or bragging rights, is allowed for most scholars. It becomes haram when everyone pays an entry fee into a pot and the winners take the money, because that's gambling. Daily fantasy sites and sportsbook-style contests fall into the same trap.

Why paid leagues are the problem

Islam forbids maysir, which is gambling or games of chance where people put money in and some win at the others' expense.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَا ٱلْخَمْرُ وَٱلْمَيْسِرُ وَٱلْأَنصَابُ وَٱلْأَزْلَـٰمُ رِجْسٌ مِّنْ عَمَلِ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنِ فَٱجْتَنِبُوهُ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ "O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful." Quran 5:90

The next verse explains that Satan uses gambling to cause "animosity and hatred" and to keep you from prayer (Quran 5:91). The Prophet ﷺ took this so seriously that he said anyone who even says to a friend, "Come, let us gamble," should give charity as an expiation (Sahih al-Bukhari 4860).

A typical paid league works like this: twelve friends each put in $50, and the top three split the $600. Each player risks his money hoping to take others' money. Scholars say that's gambling, even if skill is involved in picking players.

What's usually fine

  • Free leagues: No money, just picking players and following the season. Most scholars see this as a permissible game, like any other sports hobby.
  • Prizes from a sponsor: If a company or the platform gives a prize and nobody pays to enter, many scholars allow it, since no one loses money.
  • A trophy or bragging rights: A cheap trophy, a funny forfeit (that isn't humiliating) or just being champion for a year is fine.

The same logic applies to card games and other games with friends. See Can I still play poker with friends as a Muslim if we don't bet money?

Daily fantasy and betting apps

Apps like DraftKings and FanDuel, and many UK fantasy betting sites, are built around paid entry and cash prizes. These are legally treated as gambling in many places, and Islamically they're the same as betting. The same goes for office sweepstakes and paid pools. Keep it in balance

Even a free league can take over your Sundays. Watch out if it's making you skip prayers, argue with friends or spend hours every day on trades. A hobby should refresh you, not pull you away from what matters. See Can I still play video games as a Muslim?

Key points
  • Free fantasy leagues are allowed for most scholars.
  • Paid entry with a prize pot is gambling and haram.
  • Sponsor-funded prizes with free entry are generally fine.
  • Don't let any game push out prayer and family time.
Tip: If your work or friend league has a buy-in, ask if you can join the free version, or play for a trophy that the commissioner buys out of his own pocket.
