Yes, feeding stray animals is charity in Islam. The Prophet ﷺ said there is a reward for kindness to every living creature, and he told of a man who was forgiven for giving water to a thirsty dog. Putting out food or water for strays, cats or birds is a real good deed.

The thirsty dog

The Prophet ﷺ told the story of a man who found a dog panting and licking the mud out of thirst. He climbed down a well, filled his shoe with water and gave it to the dog. Allah thanked him and forgave him. The companions asked, "Is there a reward for us in animals?" He replied, "There is a reward for kindness to every living being" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2363).

The opposite is also true: a woman was punished because she locked up a cat and neither fed it nor let it find its own food (Sahih al-Bukhari 2365). Mercy to animals matters to Allah.

وَمَا مِن دَآبَّةٍ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَا طَـٰٓئِرٍ يَطِيرُ بِجَنَاحَيْهِ إِلَّآ أُمَمٌ أَمْثَالُكُم "And there is no creature on [or within] the earth or bird that flies with its wings except [that they are] communities like you." Quran 6:38

Even what animals take counts

The Prophet ﷺ said that if a Muslim plants a tree or sows a crop and a bird, a person or an animal eats from it, it is charity for him (Sahih Muslim 1553). If accidental feeding is rewarded, deliberate kindness is even more so.

Practical ways to help

  • Water: a bowl of fresh water outside in summer or a de-iced one in winter helps birds, cats and hedgehogs.
  • Food: leave suitable food for stray cats or birds, not leftovers that can make them ill.
  • Dogs: feeding a stray dog is rewarded, as the hadith shows. If its saliva touches you or your bowl, simply wash it according to your school's rules.
  • Shelters and rescues: donating money, food or time to an animal shelter is also sadaqah. See Can I donate to an animal shelter as a Muslim?

Be a good neighbour too

In many UK and European cities, feeding pigeons or foxes is discouraged or restricted because it causes mess, disease or conflict with neighbours. Islam also cares about not harming the people around you, so follow local rules and be thoughtful about where and what you feed. If you'd like to go further, you could adopt a stray. See Can I keep a cat inside my house?

Charity to animals doesn't replace zakat, which goes to people in need. It is voluntary sadaqah, open to everyone, even if you have very little money.

Key points
  • Kindness to any living creature is rewarded (Sahih al-Bukhari 2363).
  • Neglecting an animal in your care is a sin.
  • Food, water and shelter donations for animals all count as sadaqah.
  • Respect local rules and your neighbours when feeding strays.
Tip: Keep a small bag of cat or bird food in your car or bag. When you see a hungry stray, you're ready, and you've done a deed the Prophet ﷺ praised.
