Is Friday prayer compulsory?

Yes, for most adult Muslim men. Jumu'ah, the Friday congregational prayer, is an obligation for adult, sane Muslim men who are healthy and living in a town where it's held. Women, children, travelers and people who are sick aren't required to attend. Anyone who misses it simply prays Dhuhr instead.
Where the obligation comes from
The Quran addresses Friday prayer directly, telling believers to stop trading and head to the prayer when the call is made. Scholars of all four schools agree that this makes Jumu'ah a personal obligation (fard 'ayn) for those it applies to, and in its time it replaces the regular Dhuhr prayer. Who has to attend
The Prophet ﷺ said Friday prayer in congregation is a duty on every Muslim with four exceptions: a slave, a woman, a boy and a sick person (Sunan Abi Dawud 1067, graded sahih). Based on this and other evidence, scholars list the conditions as:
- Adult and sane: children aren't obliged, though bringing boys helps them build the habit.
- Male: women may attend and it counts for them, but they don't have to.
- Resident: most scholars say travelers are excused, though they're welcome to join.
- Healthy and able: illness, caring for a sick person, or real danger on the way excuses you.
Valid excuses and the warning about skipping
Genuine excuses include illness, heavy rain or unsafe roads, fear for your safety, or a job you truly can't leave without serious harm. Work and school alone are usually not enough if you can arrange a long lunch break, swap a shift or ask for a religious accommodation, which many US and UK employers grant. See Can I miss Friday prayer because of a lecture?
The Prophet ﷺ warned that whoever leaves Friday prayer three times in a row out of carelessness, Allah puts a seal on his heart (Sunan Abi Dawud 1052, graded hasan sahih). The key word is carelessness: this is about neglect, not about someone with a real reason.
If you miss it
If you miss Jumu'ah, with or without an excuse, you pray four rakat of Dhuhr as on any other day. There's no way to make up Jumu'ah itself later. If you missed it without a reason, make sincere tawbah and plan better for next week. New Muslims who are still building up to the five daily prayers shouldn't panic either.
