It depends. Gaming is not haram in itself, but an addiction that makes you miss prayers, neglect your family, work or study, or harm your health becomes a sin to repent from. The aim is balance. Think of it as a struggle to overcome, not only a label.

When gaming becomes a problem

Islam allows lawful fun. The trouble begins when play takes over duties. The Quran warns believers not to let distractions divert them from the remembrance of Allah:

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تُلْهِكُمْ أَمْوَٰلُكُمْ وَلَآ أَوْلَـٰدُكُمْ عَن ذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ وَمَن يَفْعَلْ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَ "undefined" Quran 63:9

Signs of trouble include staying up all night and missing Fajr, skipping Jumu'ah, lying about how long you play, losing interest in family or work, and feeling restless when you cannot play.

Free time is a blessing

The Prophet ﷺ said there are two blessings that many people are deceived into losing: health and free time (Sahih al-Bukhari 6412). Hours drained by endless matches are hours you will be asked about. This does not make every game wrong, but it asks us to use time wisely. See Can I still play video games as a Muslim?

How to cut back

  1. Anchor your day to prayer. Plan gaming around the five prayer times, never over them.
  2. Set a daily limit and use a timer or the console's parental tools on yourself.
  3. Remove triggers. Delete the game that hooks you most or move the console out of your bedroom.
  4. Fill the gap. Exercise, see friends, join a Quran circle or learn a new skill.
  5. Tell someone. A friend or family member can help hold you accountable.
  6. Make dua. Ask Allah for strength and make sincere repentance each time you slip.

When to get extra help

If you cannot cut back despite trying, or gaming is linked to anxiety, depression or isolation, speak to a doctor or counsellor. Seeking treatment is not a lack of faith; the Prophet ﷺ encouraged seeking treatment for illness. A trusted imam can also support you spiritually.
