Is hijab mandatory in Islam?

Yes. The Quran tells believing women to cover their adornment and draw their head covers over their chests, and all four Sunni schools of law agree that hijab is required once a girl reaches puberty. That said, Islam is learned step by step, and struggling with hijab doesn't make you any less Muslim.
What the Quran says
Two passages form the basis. The first speaks directly to believing women:
The second tells the Prophet's wives, daughters and "the women of the believers" to draw their outer garments over themselves, "that is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused" (Quran 33:59).
How the first Muslims understood it
Aisha described how the early emigrant women reacted when this verse came down: they tore their wraps and used them to cover themselves (Sahih al-Bukhari 4758). There was no debate about whether it applied to them. Over fourteen centuries, the Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools all treated covering the hair and body as an obligation. Their differences are about details, like the face and feet, not about the headscarf itself.
What about modern objections?
You may hear that hijab is "just culture" or was only for the Prophet's wives. A small number of modern writers do argue this, but the verses address believing women in general, and the scholars of every school read them that way. It's fine to ask questions and look at the evidence; Islam welcomes that. See What does hijab actually cover?
Obligation and patience go together
Knowing something is required is different from being able to do it overnight. Many converts take time, and that's normal. Allah "does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity" (Quran 2:286). Keep your intention sincere, take steps you can manage, and ask Allah for help. See Do I have to wear hijab right away after becoming Muslim?
And remember: hijab isn't only a scarf. Modest behavior, lowering the gaze and good character are part of it too, for women and men alike (Quran 24:30).
- The Quran commands hijab in 24:31 and 33:59.
- All four Sunni schools agree it's required after puberty.
- Scholars differ only on details like the face and feet.
- Taking time to start doesn't cancel your faith.

Not on its own, since hair, neck and ears still show. But a hat with a high collar or snood can work as a step or for a work dress code.
