Is hijab only for married women?

No, hijab isn't only for married women. In Islam, hijab is linked to reaching puberty, not to marriage. Single, married, divorced and widowed women all share the same guidance on covering in front of non-mahram men.
Where the idea comes from
Some cultures use head coverings to show that a woman is married, and in parts of Europe married women once wore headscarves for that reason. Islam doesn't work that way. When the Quran gives the command, it speaks to all believing women together:
The verse names the Prophet's ﷺ wives, his daughters and all believing women in one breath. It doesn't say "married women", and scholars have always read it as speaking to every adult Muslim woman.
What really starts the obligation: puberty
Scholars of all four schools (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali) agree that hijab becomes a duty when a girl reaches puberty. The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah doesn't accept the prayer of a woman who has reached puberty unless she wears a head covering (Sunan Abi Dawud 641). That hadith is about prayer, but scholars use it to show that puberty, not a wedding, is the turning point. For younger girls, see At what age should a girl start wearing hijab?
Does anything change after marriage?
- Your husband can see you without hijab, so you don't cover in front of him.
- His father and sons from another marriage become mahram to you as well.
- Everyone else stays the same. Hijab in public looks exactly as it did before.
What about older or divorced women?
Divorce or becoming a widow doesn't remove hijab either. The Quran does give some relief to very elderly women who no longer expect marriage (Quran 24:60), but that's about old age, not marital status. See Do older women still need to wear hijab? For the bigger question of whether hijab is a duty at all, see Is hijab mandatory in Islam?
- Hijab is for all adult Muslim women, married or not.
- The duty starts at puberty, by agreement of the four schools.
- Marriage only adds your husband and his close family as mahrams.
- Some relief applies to very elderly women, not to single women.
