Is horse riding sunnah?

It depends on what you mean by sunnah. Riding is encouraged, but it isn't a required sunnah. The Prophet ﷺ praised horses, held horse races and allowed prizes for them, so many Muslims see riding as a sunnah-inspired sport. Scholars explain it's not an act of worship in itself, though. Ride with a good intention, like keeping fit or building skill and courage, and you can be rewarded for it.

What the hadith say about horses

  • Blessing in horses: "Good will remain in the foreheads of horses till the Day of Resurrection" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2849).
  • Races in Medina: the Prophet ﷺ organised horse races over set distances, and the companion Ibn Umar took part (Sahih al-Bukhari 420).
  • Prizes allowed: "Wagers are allowed only for racing camels, or horses or shooting arrows" (Sunan Abi Dawud 2574).

The well-known saying "teach your children swimming, archery and horse riding" is usually attributed to the caliph Umar, not to the Prophet ﷺ himself. It still shows how the early Muslims valued these skills. For the bigger picture, see Which sports did the Prophet Muhammad encourage?

Is it a "sunnah" today?

Scholars use "sunnah" in two senses. In the narrow sense it means an act of worship the Prophet ﷺ did regularly, like praying two rakat before Fajr. Horse riding isn't that. In the broader sense it means something he encouraged and approved of, and riding fits here.

In his time, horses were transport and defence, so riding well made the community strong. Many scholars say the spirit of the hadith today covers any useful fitness or skill. So riding is a lovely, permitted hobby with a link to the Prophet's world, but you're not falling short if you never sit on a horse.

Things to keep in mind

  • Kindness to the animal: Islam forbids cruelty to animals. Learn proper care, and don't push a horse beyond its strength.
  • Clothing: riding trousers and boots are practical. Women can wear a long top or riding skirt over them. See Can Muslim women wear trousers?
  • Lessons: if the instructor needs to adjust your position, ask them to explain rather than touch, or ask for a same-gender instructor where possible.
  • Race betting: watching horse racing is fine, but betting on it is gambling. See Is sports betting haram?

A good intention changes everything

An ordinary hobby becomes rewarding when you do it for a good reason: staying strong to serve your family, enjoying Allah's creation, or teaching your children confidence. Say "Bismillah" before you mount and thank Allah after a good ride.

Key points
  • The Prophet ﷺ praised horses and held horse races.
  • Riding is encouraged, not a required act of worship.
  • Treat horses kindly and dress modestly while riding.
  • Betting on horse races is gambling and not allowed.
Tip: Many riding schools offer a single taster lesson. Book one for the family with the intention of reviving a sunnah-inspired skill, and see who enjoys it.
