Is it haram to cheat in sports?

Yes, cheating in sports is haram. Islam forbids deception in every area of life, and a game is no exception. Faking injuries, doping, match-fixing, breaking the rules on purpose or lying to the referee are all forms of cheating that a Muslim should avoid, even when "everyone does it."
Honesty applies on the pitch too
The Prophet ﷺ once put his hand into a heap of grain at the market and found it wet underneath. He told the seller to put the wet part on top so people could see it, and said, "Whoever cheats is not one of me" (Sahih Muslim 102). That principle covers any situation where you gain an advantage by hiding the truth.
He also said that truthfulness leads to righteousness and righteousness leads to Paradise, while lying leads to wickedness (Sahih al-Bukhari 6094). Sport is a great training ground for that kind of character.
Taking more than your share
The Quran warns those who give short measure and take full measure for themselves:
Scholars apply this beyond shopkeepers to anyone who takes an unfair advantage. Winning by cheating means taking a result, a medal or prize money that belongs to someone else.
What counts as cheating
- Doping and banned substances, which also harm your body. See Is bodybuilding haram?
- Diving and faking fouls or injuries to win a penalty or waste time.
- Match-fixing or deliberately losing for money, which often links to gambling. See Is sports betting haram?
- Lying about age or weight class, or using illegal equipment.
- Cheating in casual games and fitness challenges, like faking your step count or times.
What isn't cheating
Normal tactics within the rules, like a dummy pass, a disguised serve or a well-planned strategy, are part of the game that everyone has agreed to. The issue is breaking the rules or deceiving officials and opponents, not playing smart. If you've cheated before, sincere repentance and fixing what you can is enough; Allah forgives. The same principle applies in class too. See Is it haram to cheat on exams?
- Cheating in sports is haram, like cheating anywhere else.
- Doping, diving, match-fixing and lying to referees all count.
- Smart tactics within the rules are fine.
- Honest play is a form of da'wah and good character.
