No, dropping out of university is not haram in itself. A degree is a worldly choice, not a religious duty. What matters is why you leave, whether you keep your promises and debts, and what beneficial path you take next.

A degree is not an obligation

Islam values knowledge highly, but the knowledge every Muslim must seek is the basics of their faith: belief, prayer, fasting and what's halal and haram in their daily life. A university degree is a means to a career, and many good Muslims never had one. Leaving a course that isn't right for you, whether to change subject, start work, learn a trade or care for family, is a personal decision. See Can I choose any major as a Muslim?

When leaving could become a problem

  • Broken promises: if you signed a scholarship or sponsorship contract that requires you to finish or repay, you must honor it or settle it fairly.
  • Parents: if your parents are paying and strongly object, talk it through respectfully. Kindness to parents is a duty, even when the final decision is yours as an adult.
  • Laziness or despair: walking away from all effort and responsibility is not the Muslim way.
  • Leaving to do something haram: the problem is the haram path, not the leaving.

Leaving for your faith

Some converts consider dropping out because of interest-based loans, mixed housing or a haram field of study. Scholars differ on student loans, and there are often other options, such as changing course, switching to part-time or living at home, so get advice before making a big decision for that reason alone. See Are student loans haram?

How to decide well

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Strive for that which will benefit you, seek help from Allah, and do not feel helpless" (Sahih Muslim 2664). Weigh the benefits honestly, talk to a careers adviser, and pray istikhara for guidance. See What is istikhara and should I pray it before marriage? It works for study decisions too.

فَإِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا "For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease." Quran 94:5

If you're struggling with stress or mental health, speak to student support before quitting. A break, extension or deferral may solve the problem without losing your place.

Key points
  • Dropping out of university is not haram in itself.
  • Keep any contracts, debts and promises you made.
  • Be gentle and honest with parents who support you.
  • Choose a beneficial next step and pray istikhara.
Tip: Before you withdraw, ask your university about "interrupting" or "deferring" your studies. It keeps the door open if you change your mind in a year.
