It depends on the situation, but ghosting a friend or relative without reason goes against Islamic manners. Islam forbids cutting off a fellow Muslim for more than three days over a dispute. Stepping back from a haram relationship, or from someone who harms you, is allowed, ideally with a short, kind message.

The three-day rule

The Prophet ﷺ said: "It is not lawful for a man to forsake his brother for more than three nights, each turning away when they meet. The better of the two is the one who greets first" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6077). Scholars apply this to quarrels and grudges. Suddenly ignoring a friend's messages for weeks because you're annoyed is very close to what this hadith describes.

Islam also places great weight on keeping family ties, so ghosting parents or siblings is more serious than ghosting a casual contact.

When stepping away is allowed

  • Haram relationships: after becoming Muslim, ending a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship or a flirty "talking stage" is the right thing to do. See Can I still have a boyfriend or girlfriend after becoming Muslim?
  • Harm and abuse: you're not required to stay in contact with someone who is abusive, manipulative, or dangerous. Your safety comes first.
  • Bad influence: distancing yourself from people who pull you into sin is allowed, and even praised.

Even then, scholars distinguish "cutting off" from simply reducing contact. You can keep greetings polite while seeing someone less. See How do I set boundaries with toxic family as a Muslim?

A gentle word beats silence

The Quran teaches that even when you have to turn away from someone, you should still speak kindly:

وَإِمَّا تُعْرِضَنَّ عَنْهُمُ ٱبْتِغَآءَ رَحْمَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّكَ تَرْجُوهَا فَقُل لَّهُمْ قَوْلًا مَّيْسُورًا "And if you [must] turn away from them awaiting mercy from your Lord which you expect, then speak to them a gentle word." Quran 17:28

Ghosting leaves the other person confused and hurt. A short message like "I've decided to end this, I wish you well" is honest, closes the door, and protects their dignity. If you fear a long argument, you don't have to reply after that.

Friends after becoming Muslim

Some converts quietly disappear from old friends because they feel awkward about not drinking or partying anymore. You don't have to vanish. Many friendships survive with new activities. See Can I keep my non-Muslim friends after becoming Muslim?

Key points
  • Ignoring a Muslim for more than three days over a grudge is forbidden.
  • Ending haram or harmful relationships is allowed.
  • A short, kind goodbye is better than silent ghosting.
  • Family ties deserve extra care before cutting contact.
Tip: If you've ghosted someone and feel bad, a simple "Sorry I went quiet, I hope you're well" can repair a lot. Being the first to reach out is, in the Prophet's ﷺ words, the better of the two.
