Is it haram to have an AI girlfriend?

Most scholars would say yes, an AI girlfriend or boyfriend is haram when it's romantic or sexual. An app can't be a spouse, and flirting, sexual chat or fantasy with it feeds desires Islam asks us to guard. Using AI as a tool, or even as a friendly chatbot for company, is a different question.

What makes it a problem

An AI companion is software, so it isn't zina in the legal sense. But Islam doesn't only forbid the act; it also asks us to avoid what leads to it and to protect our hearts and private parts. Allah describes the successful believers as:

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَـٰفِظُونَ "And they who guard their private parts." Quran 23:5

Many AI girlfriend apps are designed around flirting, sexual roleplay and explicit images. That falls under the same rules as watching explicit content or sexting with a stranger: it stirs desires outside marriage. See What should I do if I see haram content on my feed?

It can't give what marriage gives

Islam treats loneliness and desire as real, human needs, not something to be ashamed of. The answer it offers is a real relationship:

وَمِنْ ءَايَـٰتِهِۦٓ أَنْ خَلَقَ لَكُم مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ أَزْوَٰجًا لِّتَسْكُنُوٓا۟ إِلَيْهَا وَجَعَلَ بَيْنَكُم مَّوَدَّةً وَرَحْمَةً "And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy." Quran 30:21

An app is built to keep you hooked and often to sell subscriptions. It always agrees with you, never has needs of its own, and can make real people feel harder to deal with. The Prophet ﷺ encouraged young people who can afford it to marry, and those who can't to fast, because it helps control desire (Sahih al-Bukhari 5066).

What about a friendly chatbot?

Using AI to practise a language, talk through your day or ask questions isn't the same as a romantic partner. Still, watch for warning signs: pet names, jealousy roleplay, sharing intimate details, or feeling you'd rather talk to the app than to people. That's when it starts drifting into the same territory. The same applies to real people online. See Can I still have a boyfriend or girlfriend after becoming Muslim?

If you're lonely

Many converts feel isolated, especially in the first years. That pain is real. Better steps are joining a mosque's new Muslim circle, talking to a counsellor, and, when you're ready, looking for marriage the halal way. See How do I deal with loneliness as a new Muslim?

Key points
  • Romantic or sexual AI companions are widely seen as haram.
  • Islam asks us to guard our private parts and what leads to sin (Quran 23:5).
  • Marriage is the halal answer to desire and loneliness (Sahih al-Bukhari 5066).
  • Neutral AI use is fine; watch for it turning romantic.
Tip: If you already use one of these apps, delete it rather than trying to "use it less". Then fill that time with one real conversation a day, with family, a friend or someone at the mosque.
